Morning Sports for Sunday, May 11th:
MLB: Tigers Blast Twins
The Tigers erupted for six runs in the second inning… and cruised to a 9-3 victory over the Twins Saturday afternoon. Miguel Cabrera powered the big inning with a three-run homer. Victor Martinez added another three-run blast in the seventh inning – his fourth homer in the past five games. Max Scherzer also gave up a three-run homer in the fourth inning, but settled down to complete six innings, and earn his fifth win of the season. The Tigers will try to take the series against the Twins this afternoon. Robbie Ray will face Samuel Deduno. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Outfielder Andy Dirks has begun light workouts, as he recovers from back surgery. He’s hoping to be ready to join the team next month. Club officials say pitchers Anibal Sanchez and Luke Putkonen remain on track to rejoin the team this month. Sanchez will make a simulated start next week. Putkonen is on a rehab assignment at Toledo.
Milwaukee reliever Jim Henderson says the pain is gone from his right shoulder. He’s scheduled to begin light throwing today… but could be several weeks from returning.
Brewers Edge Yanks
Rickie Weeks’ seeing-eye single in the seventh lifted the Brewers over the Yankees 5-4. Carlos Gomez, Jonathan Lucroy and Aramis Ramirez hit long homers for Milwaukee. The Brewers and Yankees wrap up that set in Milwaukee this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against David Phelps.
Lions, Packers Add Players in NFL Draft
The Lions bolstered their defense by selecting Brigham Young University linebacker Kyle Van Hoy in the second round of the NFL Draft Friday night. Van Hoy is described as versatile… and was projected by many observers as a third or fourth-round pick. He’s overcome adversity… including two alcohol-related incidents before he reached college, and an illness and surgery while at BYU. In the third round, Detroit selected Arkansas center Travis Swanson. Swanson was a two-time captain for the Razorbacks, and started 50 college games.
On Saturday, the Lions used the 133rd pick to take Utah State cornerback Nevin Lawson. Lawson also excelled on special teams. With the 136th pick, they selected defensive end Larry Webster from Bloomsburg University. His dad played in the NFL for a decade. With pick 158, they chose Princeton defensive tackle Caraun Reid. They used the 189th pick on Notre Dame receiver T.J. Jones… and the 229th pick to get Boston College kicker Nate Freese.
After the draft, the Lions signed Missouri quarterback James Franklin to a free agent contract.
The Packers used their second-round pick Friday to take Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams. He’s a big, physical player, who could be an immediate replacement for James Jones, who left as a free agent. In the third round, Green Bay chose defensive tackle Khyri Thornton from Southern Mississippi. He’s described as “energetic,” and was a three-year starter… but was projected as a fifth or sixth-round selection. Green Bay also had a compensatory pick at the end of the third round, which they used to take California tight end Richard Rogers. He’s considered a “project,” because of some injuries and coaching turnover in college… and was also projected as a fifth or sixth-round pick.
The Packers used the 121st pick to take Arizona linebacker Carl Bradford. Ohio State center Corey Linsley came with the 161st selection. They chose Wisconsin receiver Jared Abbrederis with pick 176… and Baylor cornerback Demetri Goodson with pick 197. Goodson is a project… he transferred to Baylor and began playing football midway through college. Before that, he was the starting point guard on the Gonzaga basketball team. They closed their draft by taking Saginaw Valley State receiver Jeff Janis with the 236th pick.
