Morning Sports for Saturday, May 10th:
MLB: Tigers Lose Second Straight
Phil Hughes shut down the Tigers over seven strong innings, as the Twins beat Detroit Friday night 2-1. Tigers’ starter Justin Verlander matched Hughes pitch for pitch until Minnesota broke through for two runs in the seventh. Detroit’s only run came in the ninth, when Alex Avila doubled home Austin Jackson. The Tigers will try to snap their two game losing streak against the Twins this afternoon. Max Scherzer will face Kyle Gibson. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Tigers’ pitcher Anibal Sanchez said he’s hoping to return to the Detroit rotation on May 18th. He’s nursing a lacerated finger.
Brewers Fall to Yanks
The Yankees scored four times off Yovani Gallardo in the fourth inning, and held on for a 5-3 victory over the Brewers. After finishing April with the best record in baseball, the Crew has lost six of its eight games in May. That set against the Yankees continues in Milwaukee tonight. Kyle Lohse will start against CC Sabathia.
Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun took batting practice on Friday. Manager Ron Roenicke said he hopes Braun can be back in the lineup when his term on the disabled list ends on Tuesday. Braun is recovering from a rib cage muscle strain.
Lions, Packers Add Players in NFL Draft
The Lions bolstered their defense by selecting Brigham Young University linebacker Kyle Van Hoy in the second round of the NFL Draft Friday night. Van Hoy is described as versatile… and was projected by many observers as a third or fourth-round pick. He’s overcome adversity… including two alcohol-related incidents before he reached college, and an illness and surgery while at BYU. In the third round, Detroit selected Arkansas center Travis Swanson. Swanson was a two-time captain for the Razorbacks, and started 50 college games.
The Packers used their second-round pick to take Fresno State wide receiver Davante Adams. He’s a big, physical player, who could be an immediate replacement for James Jones, who left as a free agent. In the third round, Green Bay chose defensive tackle Khyri Thornton from Southern Mississippi. He’s described as “energetic,” and was a three-year starter… but was projected as a fifth or sixth-round selection. Green Bay also had a compensatory pick at the end of the third round, which they used to take California tight end Richard Rogers. He’s considered a “project,” because of some injuries and coaching turnover in college… and was also projected as a fifth or sixth-round pick.
The final three rounds of the draft will take place today. The Lions hold selections 133, 136, 146, and 189. The Packers have picks 121, 161, 176, 197, and 236.

They’ll be involved with Michigan Tech in a four-team classic at Southwest Minnesota State later that month. Both teams will play at Michigan Tech on Monday, February 2nd… and will host the Huskies on Thursday, February 26th, in their regular-season finale.
La Flèche du Nord Today
The Keweenaw Peninsula cycling season begins today with the 77-mile La Flèche du Nord. It’s a one-way, non-competitive endurance event. Cyclists will leave downtown Houghton around 10:00… and will travel up the peninsula. Snow will prevent riders from making the traditional final climb up Brockway Mountain. This year’s finish will be at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. For more details, click here.
