In the second game of the Gibson Cup series last night, the Calumet Wolverines scored first… but the Portage Lake Pioneers responded with four unanswered goals, and came away with a 4-1 victory. Jay Pietila scored twice for the Pioneers.

The Cup will be decided tonight at Dee Stadium. Faceoff is at 7:30. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In the N-H-L… the Red Wings skate at Toronto tonight.

In the N-B-A Friday night… the Heat smothered the Pistons 110-78. Detroit was held to less than 20 points in each of the final three quarters. The Pistons have now lost 17 of their last 21 games, and play at Philadelphia tonight.

In the NCAA basketball tournament Friday night… Michigan opened up a nine-point halftime lead, and then held on to edge Tennesee 71-73. Michigan State upended East division top-seed Virginia 61-59. The Wolverines face Kentucky tomorrow evening… and the Spartans take on Connecticut. Hear both games… and tonight’s quarterfinals between Florida and Dayton, and Arizona and Wisconsin… on AM 1400, WCCY.

In baseball spring training action yesterday, Alex Avila hit his first home run of the spring, as the Tigers wrapped up their Grapefruit League schedule with a 6-3 victory over the Rays. The Tigers play an exhibition against the Nationals in Washington today… then open the regular season at home Monday afternoon against the Royals.

Ryan Braun hit a three-run homer, but the Brewers lost to the Royals 5-4 in an exhibition at Miller Park. The Brewers will play another exhibition game against the Royals this afternoon… then open the regular season at home against the Braves on Monday.

The Finlandia University softball team lost both of their games to Wisconsin-River Falls Friday night. in the first game, the Falcons scored four times in the fifth, and four times in the sixth, en route to a  9-3 victory. In the nightcap, the Lions led 4-1 going into the seventh inning, but River Falls scored four in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 5-4 walk-off victory.

The Lions’ baseball games at Carroll College this weekend have been postponed.
