At the 19U Girls’ Tier II National Hockey Championships, the Keweenaw Storm finished pool play undefeated… after a 7-0 victory over Team Wyoming on Friday. The Storm scored single goals in each of the first two periods… then erupted for five scores in the third. Jessica Schlaff scored twice, and added an assist. Mackenzie Hietala and Madison Labyak each had a goal and an assist. Kenna Farrey, Alexis Pyykkonen and Mackenzie Hietala also scored. Stephanie King earned the win in goal… as the Storm outshot Wyoming 48-13. The Storm will face Colorado Springs in the quarterfinals at 12:20 this afternoon. If they win, they’ll play a semifinal game at 7:00.
The Portage Lake Pioneers opened pool play in the G-L-H-L tournament Friday afternoon with a 9-2 victory over De Pere. The Calumet Wolverines defeated De Pere 5-1 Friday night. Mike Babcock scored twice. The Pioneers and Wolverines will meet this morning in Fond du Lac. The winner of that game will advance to the semifinals… along with the winners of the two other pools, and one wild card team.
In the N-H-L Friday night… the Red Wings scored three goals in the first period… and held on to edge the Sabres 3-2. Darren Helm, Tomas Jurco and Daniel Alfredsson scored. Jimmy Howard made 21 saves to earn the win. It was coach Mike Babcock’s 413th win for Detroit, tying him with Jack Adams for the most victories in Red Wings’ history. The Wings have won five in a row… and skate at Montreal tonight.
In baseball yesterday… Miguel Cabrera collected his 2,000th career hit, as the Tigers bombed the Orioles 10-4. Cabrera had four hits. The 2,000th was a two-run homer in the eighth inning. He’s the seventh-fastest player to reach 2,000 in major league history. Rajai Davis and Torii Hunter also homered – back-to-back in the fourth inning, as play resumed following a 34-minute rain delay. Anibal Sanchez gave up two runs in the first inning… then pitched shutout ball through the fourth. Drew Smyly replaced him after the rain delay, and earned the win with three scoreless innings. Baltimore’s final two runs came of Joba Chamberlain in the ninth. The Tigers host the Orioles again this afternoon. Rick Porcello will start against Bud Norris. The Brewers scored four times in the ninth, and spoiled the Red Sox’ home opener 6-2. Lyle Overbay’s two-run double broke the tie. Overbay made the Brewers’ roster as a minor-league invitee… after having been released by the Sox last season. Jonathan Lucroy homered. Marco Estrada pitched into the sixth inning. He gave up both Boston runs… but only one was earned. The Brewers play at Boston again tonight. Wily Peralta will start against Clay Buchholz.
The Finlandia softball doubleheader at Adrian College Friday afternoon was postponed because of poor field conditions. The Lions are scheduled to play two at Calvin College in Grand Rapids today… and have a doubleheader at Albion College on Sunday.

In the N-B-A Friday night… the Pistons fell behind early, and lost to the Nets 116-104. Detroit trailed by 18 at the end of the third quarter. Andre Drummond led the Pistons with 23 points and 18 rebounds. The Pistons have lost 20 of their last 25 games, and host the Celtics tonight.
The Michigan Tech men’s tennis team plays at Lake Superior State today.
Jonathan Kilpela broke the MTU school record in the 10K run at the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on Friday. The senior from Atlantic Mine finished in 31:11.94 to break the previous record of 31:32.77 held by Brian Stetter from the 2010 season. He finished 26th in his heat which featured numerous Division I athletes.
