Morning Sports for Friday, May 9th:

MLB: Tigers’ Win Streak Ends
The Tigers’ eight-game win streak ended yesterday, with a 6-2 loss to the Astros. Detroit got off to a promising start when Nick Castellanos doubled home Austin Jackson in the second inning, and Victor Martinez hit his seventh home run of the season in the fourth. But, the Astros broke through for three runs off Drew Smyly in the fifth inning… and the Tigers could do nothing more against Houston starter Dallas Keuchel… who gave up just six hits before leaving with two outs in the eighth. The Tigers open a home series against the Twins tonight. Justin Verlander will face Phil Hughes. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers Host Yanks
The Brewers had yesterday off, and open an interleague set against the Yankees in Milwaukee tonight. Yovani Gallardo will start against Masahiro Tanaka.

Lions Select Tight End; Packers Take Safety
Eric Ebron
The Detroit Lions used the 10th pick of the NFL Draft last night to take tight end Eric Ebron from North Carolina. Ebron set school records for receptions and receiving yards by a tight end last season. Offensive coach Joe Lombardi thinks he’ll fit in nicely between receivers Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate… and running back Reggie Bush. Earlier in the day, Ebron proposed to his girlfriend on the observation deck at the Empire State Building. She said “yes.” The Lions will have the 45th pick in the second round… which will be held tonight.

Ha Ha Clinton DixThe Packers used the 21st pick to select Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton Dix. Dix says that coach Nick Saban’s involved defensive schemes have prepared him well for the next level. Ha Ha… by the way… is a nickname his grandmother gave him as a child. It’s based on his real first name… Hasean. The Packers will have the 53rd pick in the second round tonight.

Other highlights from the first round… Houston selected South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney with the first pick. The Vikings took pass rusher Anthony Barr from UCLA with the ninth pick… then traded up to get Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater at the 28th spot. The Bears selected Virginia Tech cornerback Kyle Fuller.

Finlandia Women’s Hoops Adds JUCO Transfer
Dianne DoeblerThe Finlandia University women’s basketball team has added a junior college transfer student for next season. Dianne Doebler comes in from Oakland Community College. She can play guard or forward. Last season, she averaged seven points and five rebounds per game for the Raiders. She played her high school ball at Roscommon.

La Flèche du Nord Tomorrow
LA FLECHE DU NORDThe Keweenaw Peninsula cycling season begins tomorrow with the 77-mile La Flèche du Nord. It’s a one-way, non-competitive endurance event. Cyclists will leave downtown Houghton around 10:00… and will travel up the peninsula. Snow will prevent riders from making the traditional final climb up Brockway Mountain. This year’s finish will be at the Keweenaw Mountain Lodge. For more details, click here.
