MLB Season to Begin in One Month – Wednesday Sports Wrap

MLB

Major League Baseball is set to begin its shortened season on July 23rd or 24th. The plan announced yesterday will include 60 regular-season games over a 66-day stretch, plus playoffs. To limit travel, teams will play 40 of those games against their regular division opponents, and the other 20 against opponents of the corresponding division in the other league. The designated hitter will be used in both leagues. To shorten tied games, each team will begin their at-bats from the 10th inning on with a runner at second base. Players and staff will be given COVID-19 tests every other day, beginning July 1st, when pitchers and catchers report to training camps. A separate injury list will be maintained for players who test positive. And, because Florida and Arizona are experiencing some of the worst COVID-19 outbreaks in the nation, most teams, including the Detroit Tigers, now say they will hold training sessions in their home parks.

We will broadcast all of the Detroit Tigers games on 99.3 The Lift, and will provide more specifics when we receive them from Major League Baseball.

Martha Firestone Ford is stepping down as principal owner of the Detroit Lions. Ford is 94 years old. She assumed leadership of the team six years ago, after the death of her husband, William Clay Ford. Ownership will remain in the family, with daughter Sheila Ford Hamp taking over as principal owner and chair. Hamp has worked side-by-side with her mother, and the line of succession had been well-established for some time. She said that there will be no major changes in the day-to-day operations of the team.
