MLB Players Reject Offer, Challenge Owners to Set Season – Monday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Major League Baseball Players Association says it will not accept the latest offer from team owners to salvage the 2020 season. Owners had proposed a 72-game regular season in which players would receive prorated salaries based on 80 percent of their contract values. Players have been adamant that they want salaries prorated at 100 percent of contract values.

The union has proposed plans including regular seasons of 114 and 89 games, plus playoffs. Owners’ proposals have included shorter regular seasons, which would save teams money, because players are not paid for post-season games.

Instead of making another counteroffer, the union has told Major League Baseball to set the schedule under the terms of an agreement reached earlier this spring – however many games the owners want, with salaries prorated at 100 percent of contract value. That could result in a regular season of just 48 games. In a press release, union president Tony Clark accused the owners of withholding information, and misrepresenting potential financial losses. Quote… “it unfortunately appears that further dialogue with the league would be futile. It’s time to get back to work. Tell us when and where.”

The union has demanded a solution by close of business today.
