In girls high school basketball tonight…

The Houghton swim team welcomes Kingsford today.

Calumet forward Brent Loukus has been named the LTU Michigan North Division High school Hockey Player of the Month for January. Houghton forward Jacob Kruse received honorable mention votes. The statewide awards are coordinated by the coaching staff at Lawrence Tech. KBear 102.3 is a member of the voting panel.

MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Northwood tonight.

The MTU football team collected letters of intent from 23 high school seniors yesterday. The incoming class includes Calumet standout Russ Bjorn, who was signed as a linebacker… and Lake Linden-Hubbell star Brendan Middleton, who will be a defensive back. 20 of the new recruits are from Michigan – thee other three are from Wisconsin. Other Upper Peninsula athletes on the list include Dan Nocerini from Forest Park, Ryan Jones from Sault Ste. Marie, John Paramski from Newberry, and Ashok Ravindran from Ishpeming. NMU
Both Northern Michigan University teams travel to Lake Superior State.

The Northern Michigan University football team added just nine scholarship players on signing day yesterday. Two are from the U.P. – offensive lineman Mike Pizziola from Negaunee, and defensive back Trevor Roberts from Kingsford. They also accepted preferred walk-on Travis Christensen, an offensive lineman from Marquette.

Caldwell-Pope

NBA
The Detroit Pistons broke their three-game losing streak by defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 118-98 last night. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored a season-high 38 points. The Pistons host the Minnesota Timberwolves tomorrow night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will entertain the New York Islanders tomorrow. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

NFL
The Green Bay Packers have announced that their upcoming Tailgate tour stop in Houghton will be held at the SDC, and will benefit Dial Help. A group of players, former players and team executives will be here Thursday, April 6th at 6:00. Tickets are $10.00, and are available at the SDC ticket office, or through the MTU ticket website.

The Detroit Lions have updated their visual imaging. The new team logos still feature the charging Lion, but the team name is portrayed with a different typeface. Team officials also say that the recent trend toward using black in the team’s imaging and uniforms will end, and the focus will be exclusively on the traditional Honolulu Blue and Silver.

Our high school hockey coverage continues tomorrow, when Hancock faces Livonia Stevenson at the Trenton Showcase. Our broadcast will begin around 11:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Saturday, we’ll bring you Calumet’s game against Romeo at 8:00, and Houghton’s contest against Northville around 10:00.

The Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots will play in the Super Bowl on Sunday. Pregame coverage begins around 2:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
