Finlandia

The Finlandia University softball team has added a new recruit. Hope Reinarz is an outfielder and pitcher from the Minneapolis area.

Lions hockey could return to the ice soon. The Northern Collegiate Hockey Association has adopted a plan to get competition re-started. They promise that a schedule will be released in early January. The season will proceed without St. Norbert. Both the men’s and women’s teams recently opted out.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Minnesota Timberwolves 111-101 in their season-opener last night. Josh Jackson led Detroit with 19 points. Blake Griffin and Derrick Rose each added 15. Sekou Doumbouya grabbed nine rebounds.

The Pistons host the Cleveland Cavaliers Saturday.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings will begin their season January 14th at home against the Carolina Hurricanes. This year’s schedule has been adjusted to minimize travel, so games will be played in pairs. The Wings will host the Hurricanes again January 16th, then entertain Columbus for two games, and then travel to Chicago for two, and so on.

Just the dates were released yesterday. Start times remain to be determined.

Listen for Red Wings games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers made their first significant free agent signing for next season, inking starting pitcher José Ureña to a one-year contract. Sources say it’s worth $3.25 million, plus some performance bonuses. Ureña was a steady starter for the Miami Marlins in 2017 and 2018, but his performance slipped over the past couple of years.

The Tigers also boosted their depth at catcher by signing veteran Dustin Garneau to a Minor League contract.

NFL

There is no Thursday night NFL game this week. Tomorrow, the Vikings visit the Saints. Coverage begins at 4:00 on 99.3 The Lift.

On Saturday, the Lions host the Buccaneers in a 12:30 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Cardinals entertain the 49ers in a 4:30 game. The Dolphins visit the Raiders for an evening contest. Coverage will start at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Lions returned to practice yesterday, after closing their facility Tuesday after a player and a coach tested positive for COVID-19. They worked out without interim head coach Darrell Bevell. Bevell said he has not tested positive, but was tagged in contact tracing. His quarantine in a hotel began Tuesday, on his 28th wedding anniversary. Several other coaches have also been isolated. It’s not known if they’ll be cleared to join the team for Saturday’s game.
