College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team lost a doubleheader at Wisconsin-LaCrosse yesterday, 13-0 and 9-5. Austin Green homered in the nightcap, and Jacob Mead blasted two round-trippers – his fifth and sixth of the season, setting a new school season record.

The Lions fell to 0-26 on the season. They’ll play two more at LaCrosse today.

GLIAC

Northwood University is leaving the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Timberwolves will play one final season in the GLIAC, before joining the Great Midwest Athletic Conference in July of 2022. Northwood President Kent MacDonald said the university looked forward to joining a “small private school conference with institutions of similar size.” Northwood is the smallest school in the GLIAC, and one of only three private schools. One of the others, Ashland University, is slated to move to the GMAC this summer. All of the GMAC schools are private institutions. Eight are former members of the GLIAC. Northwood has been a member of the GLIAC since 1992.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings entertain the Tampa Bay Lightning this afternoon. We’ll join the game in progress following Tigers baseball on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit visit the Charlotte Hornets tonight. Coverage begins at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Tigers’ bats continue to be missing in action, as Detroit lost to the New York Yankees 10-0 yesterday. Detroit batters collected just four singles, and struck out 18 times. Tarik Skubal gave up four runs in the first three innings. The Yankees scored five more against Buck Farmer and Bryan Garcia in the fourth. The Tigers’ team batting average has fallen to .199.

The Tigers continue that series in New York today. Spencer Turnbull will pitch against Jameson Taillon. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit manager A.J. Hinch expects pitcher Matthew Boyd to miss just one start. Boyd left Thursday’s game with tendinitis in his left knee. Initial tests indicate he just needs some rest.

The Milwaukee Brewers got past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 last night. Jackie Bradley, Jr., homered for Milwaukee. The only hit Freddy Peralta gave up over six innings was a solo home run to A.J. Pollock.

The Brewers host the Dodgers again tonight. Brandon Woodruff will start against Dustin May.

Yet another Brewer went down with an injury in last night’s contest. Omar Narváez pulled up lame while running out a single. With Manny Piña already on the injured list, recent call-up Luke Maile took over behind the plate. The Crew is running short of catchers. With Jacob Nottingham recently claimed off waivers by the Seattle Mariners, the only other backstop on their 40-man roster is prospect Mario Feliciano. Milwaukee currently has 14 players on the injured list. They include starter Corbin Burnes, who was added yesterday. The team isn’t saying why, or how much time he might miss.

NFL

The Detroit Lions looked to shore up their defense during the second night of the NFL Draft. With the 41st pick, they took Washington defensive tackle Levi Onwuzurike. They added North Carolina State defensive tackle Alim McNeill with the 72nd pick, then grabbed Syracuse cornerback Ifeatu Melifonwu with their compensatory pick at number 101. Onwuzurike was a first-team All-Pac-12 selection in 2019. He opted out of last season. McNeill was a first-team All-ACC honoree in 2020. Melifonwu was projected as a second-round pick, but fell all the way to the end of the third round.

The Lions have just two picks on the final day of the draft today.

The Green Bay Packers found some offensive help on day two. They used the 62nd pick to take Ohio State University center Josh Meyers, who was a Rimington Trophy finalist in 2020. They nabbed Clemson receiver Amari Rodgers with the 85th pick. He caught 77 passes for the Tigers last season, and was a first-team All-ACC selection.

The Packers have six picks over the final four rounds today.

The leader of Green Bay’s offense next year is yet to be determined. Reports continue to swirl that quarterback Aaron Rodgers will try to improve his contract or force a trade by holding out, or threatening to retire.
