Tigers Erupt Late
The Tigers scored seven runs in the top of the 11th inning, and beat the Indians 11-4 last night. Detroit opened up a 4-0 lead in the first inning, but Cleveland came back, and tied it up in the seventh. The Tigers loaded the bases in the top of the 11th. Eugenio Suarez singled home two runs. Victor Martinez followed with a three-run homer, and Andrew Romine singled home two more insurance runs.
The Tigers host the Giants in interleague play this evening. Rick Porcello will start against Jake Peavy. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
Kansas City was off yesterday, so the Tigers now trail the Royals by a game in the American League Central Division.
Brewers Fall to Cards
The Brewers lost to the Cardinal 3-2 last night. Wily Peralta took the loss, giving up all three runs on seven hits over six innings.
The Brewers host the Cardinals again tonight. Mike Fiers will start against John Lackey.
Milwaukee now trails Saint Louis by four games the National League Central Division.
Packers Lose Opener to Seahawks
The Green Bay Packers opened their season with a 36-16 loss to the Seahawks last night. Aaron Rodgers completed 23 of 33 passes for 189 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Green Bay’s running attack was held in check, with James Starks and Eddie Lacy limited to less than 40 yards each. Marshawn Lynch ran for 110 yards for Seattle. The Packers host the Jets a week from Sunday.

MTU Football Wins, V’Ball Falls
Garrett Mead nailed a 25-yard field goal with one second remaining, as the Michigan Tech football team edged Wayne State 18-17 last night. The kick was Mead’s fourth of the evening. The Huskies trailed by eight early in the fourth quarter, but Tyler Scarlett hit Charlie Leffingwell with a touchdown pass with five-and-a-half minutes remaining… then drove the team 69 yards in the final two minutes to set up the winning score.
The MTU volleyball team opened the Keweenaw Classic with a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin-Parkside last night. Coach Matt Jennings noticed some jitters… JENNINGS. The Huskies will face Bemidji State this afternoon at 1:30, and Upper Iowa tonight at 7:30. They’ll wrap up play in the Classic tomorrow, with matches against Winona State at 1:00, and Minnesota-Duluth at 7:00.
The MTU women’s soccer team begins its season at home this afternoon against Winona State. The game starts at 5:00 at Sherman Field. The Huskies will host Saint Cloud State Sunday at noon.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team opens its season tomorrow night against Northwood at the Superior Dome.
Finlandia University
The Finlandia University volleyball team hung tough for a while against Lake Superior State last night, but wound losing 3-0. The Lions play at a tournament in Ashland this weekend. They’ll face Concordia-Wisconsin and Maranatha Baptist this afternoon, and Rockford University and Northland College tomorrow.
The Finlandia men’s soccer team plays at the Moody Bible Institute tomorrow, and the Illinois Institute of Technology on Sunday. The women’s team visits Minnesota-Crookston tomorrow.
