McGann’s/Northern Auto Wins Two – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB: Verlander, Tigers Fall to Royals
Detroit Tigers Circle LogoJustin Verlander’s struggles continued last night, as the Tigers lost to the Royals 11-8. Verlander pitched shutout ball through four innings… but gave up four runs in the fourth, and three runs in the fifth. His earned run average has ballooned to 4.98, and some fans at Comerica Park booed him. Evan Reed compounded the damage by giving up four runs in the sixth inning. Detroit scored six runs in the bottom of the ninth to make the score respectable.

The Tigers host the Royals again tonight. Max Scherzer will face Yordano Ventura. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Torii Hunter left last night’s game with tightness in his left hamstring. He’s considered day-to-day.

Milwaukee Brewers Circle LogoBrewers Earn Late Win over D’Backs
The Brewers scored six runs over the final two innings, and beat the Diamondbacks last night 9-3. Aramis Ramirez’ two-run double in the eighth broke the game open. Wily Peralta survived  a three-run second inning to pitch through the seventh, and earn the win.

The Brewers continue that set against the Diamondbacks tonight. Kyle Lohse will start against Wade Miley.

– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Post 90 held off Auto Value 11-10. Auto Value scored three runs in the top of the ninth to make it close. Kevin LaRoux had four hits for Post 90. The score of the game between The Goal Post and Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation was not reported… nor was the score from the game between The Marley Bar and Nutini’s at Hurontown.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto defeated North Pointe Trucking 22-13. Steve Aho had five hits for McGann’s, and and Josh Frantti homered. Brent Jurmu hit one out for North Pointe. McGann’s/Northern Auto then shut down Pat’s Foods/ThermoAnalytics 18-3. Frantti and Mark Koski homered for McGann’s.

In Copper Country Twilight League Baseball tonight…
– At the Dollar Bay Field, BlueSky Health entertains Pat’s Foods.
– At the Stanton Field, the Wildcats host Mosquito Inn.

Copper Country Horseshoe League
In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last night…
– Calumet One blanked Calumet Two 9-0.
– North End One shut out No Name 9-0.
– L and L stopped Dreamland 9-0.
– Out of the Norm Tattoo shut down North End Two 9-0.
– Drift Inn got past Gasoline Alley 6-3.
– Borings Bargain Barn edged Loading Zone 5-4.

Finlandia Adds Softball Player
The Finlandia University softball team has picked up a new player for next season. Hunter Hoogewind is a middle infielder from Grand Rapids. In 2013, she helped lead her team to a conference championship, sectional championship, and a third place finish in their region. In that same season, she was named First Team All-Conference, First Team All-Region, First Team All-County, Second Team All-Area, and Honorable Mention All-State.
