Mattila, Campioni’s Advance in Fast Pitch Playoffs – Tuesday Sports Wrap

Nicholas Castellanos and Mikie Mahtook hit two-run homers, as the Detroit Tigers pounded the Kansas City Royals 10-2 last night. Jordan Zimmermann threw six scoreless innings, and left after allowing a run in the seventh.

The Tigers continue that series at Kansas City tonight. Matthew Boyd will return from Toledo to start against Travis Wood. Pregame coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Blaine Hardy was sent to Toledo to make room for Boyd on the roster.

Detroit outfielder J.D. Martinez exited last night’s game in the sixth inning with tightness in his lower back. It’s not believed to be serious, and he could be back in the lineup tonight.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 4-2 last evening. Milwaukee took an early 2-0 lead. Pittsburgh tied it as they knocked Brewers starter Brent Suter out of the game in the fifth. Josh Hader gave up the winning run in the sixth inning.

The Brewers continue that series at Pittsburgh tonight. Junior Guerra will pitch against Ivan Nova.

Milwaukee catcher Steven Vogt left last night’s game after a collision at home plate. He suffered a left knee strain and a neck strain, and will undergo further evaluation today.

Fast Pitch Softball
In opening-round action in the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League tournament last night…
 – Mattila Rock and Dock defeated Northern Michigan Land Brokers 5-1. Mel Baker was the winning pitcher with 7 strikeouts and 2 walks. Hannah Hill took the loss. Darla Mensch had a triple, double and a single for Mattila Rock and Dock. Mel Grego also had three hits. Hill and Molly Berg each had two hits for Northern Michigan Land Brokers. Mattila Rock and Dock will face Auto Pro Glass and Tire tomorrow evening at 7:00 at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden.
– Campioni’s True Value defeated Superior National Bank 5-2. Emily Erkkila was the winning pitcher. Adena Anderson suffered the loss. Campioni’s True Value will play the winner of last night’s game between Calumet Golf Club/Loading Zone II and Frank A Douglass Agency. Results from that game were not reported.

Twilight League
In Copper Country Twilight League baseball tonight…
– Superior National Bank-Stanton takes on REL-Mohawk Technologies at the Stanton field.
– Dean Kangas-State Farm meets Wolverine-Orbit at the Wolverine field.

Horseshoe League
In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
– Harter’s Party Store blanked Loading Zone II 9-0.
– Calumet Electronics downed Drift Inn 6-3.
– Calumet One defeated Dreamland Two 8-1.
– Ahmeek Fire Department edged Rocky’s Bar 5-4.
– L and L got past Harter’s Carquest 6-3.
