MLB
J.D. Martinez’ pinch-hit home run in the eighth inning powered the Detroit Tigers to a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox last night. Martinez was activated from the disabled list earlier yesterday, after missing six weeks with a broken elbow. He didn’t start, because he’d played both games of a doubleheader for the Toledo Mud Hens while on a rehab assignment on Tuesday. With the game tied in the bottom of the eighth inning, manager Brad Ausmus sent him to the plate, and he hit the first major league pitch he’d seen since June 16th over the wall in left-center field. Michael Fulmer worked six shutout innings, but left the game in the seventh after giving up a home run to Justin Morneau. Shane Greene got the win in relief. Francisco Rodriguez loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but worked out of the jam to earn his 30th save of the season.
That series concludes in Detroit this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will return from the disabled list after missing a month with a strained neck muscle to start for Detroit. Jose Quintana will pitch for the Sox. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Tigers have won eight in a row. Cleveland lost last night, so Detroit now trails the Indians by just two games in the American League Central Division.
The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the San Diego Padres 12-3 yesterday. Junior Guerra struggled through four innings, gave up four runs, and took the loss. Jhan Marinez gave up four runs over two innings, David Goforth gave up three runs in one inning, and Blaine Boyer surrendered one run in his one inning of work. Ryan Braun homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers have today off, and begin a set against the Diamondbacks in Arizona tomorrow night. Chase Anderson will pitch against Braden Shipley.
