The Detroit Tigers exploded for a 9-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics last night. Manager Brad Ausmus moved J.D. Martinez to the second spot in the batting order. J.D. responded with a three-run homer in the second inning. Victor Martinez added a three-run shot in the sixth. Justin Verlander gave up three runs over 6-1/3rd innings, and got the win. The Tigers wrap up that home set against Oakland this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against Chris Bassitt. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Detroit’s top pitching prospect will make his major-league debut tomorrow. Michael Fulmer has been called up from Toledo to start in place of Shane Greene, who is dealing with a blister on his pitching hand.
Tigers’ closer Francisco Rodriguez has returned from his emergency family leave. Outfielder Tyler Collins was sent down to Toledo to make room on the roster.
The Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs were rained out yesterday. That series concludes in Chicago this afternoon. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Jake Arrieta.
Brewers’ second baseman Scooter Gennett had his right oblique strain evaluated in Milwaukee yesterday. There’s no word as to how serious the injury is.
NHL
The opening round of the NHL playoffs ended last night when the Predators edged the Ducks 2-1 in the seventh game of that series. The second round began, as the Islanders defeated he Lightning 5-3 in the first game of that set.
NBA
The Warriors advanced to the second round of the NBA playoffs with a 114-81 victory over the Rockets last night. The Hornets edged the Heat 90-88, and the Trailblazers defeated the Clippers 108-98. Each of those winners leads their series 3-2.

– Ed Beiring knocked in the winning runs in both games as Calumet swept Houghton 4-3 and 5-2. In game one, the Kings put up four in the first inning on two-run singles by Russ Bjorn and Beiring. Jake Anderson pitched into the sixth for the win. The Gremlins struck first in the nightcap as Caleb Carlson scampered home on a wild pitch in the second. But Calumet tied it in the second and took the lead in the fifth, with Beiring adding another two-run single to close out their scoring. Carlson scored again in the bottom of the final inning as Houghton put the winning runs on the bases, but Brent Lokus pitched himself out of the jam to save the contest.

The Finlandia University baseball team v Northland College at Northland yesterday – no report. The Lions will host Northland for two games this afternoon.

Michigan Tech men’s basketball guard Bryan Heath has been awarded the 2015-16 NCAA Division II statistical championship for free throw percentage. The freshman converted 93.3 percent of his foul shots – the second-best mark in Huskies history.

The first round of the NFL Draft will be held tonight. The Detroit Lions pick 16th, and the Packers 27th.
