College Hockey

The University of St. Thomas has scrapped plans to build a new hockey arena in Saint Paul. The Tommies jumped into NCAA Division Three into Division One last year, and began playing in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Their planned arena would have seated at least 4,000, and would have been located on the site of a former auto plant. The university cited development costs as a factor in the decision. The current St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights seats only 1,000 fans, and is not considered to be up to Division One standards.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the White Sox 4-2 yesterday. Javier Báez gave Detroit a good start with a two-run homer in the top of the first inning, but the Tigers got only four more hits. Chicago came back with single runs in the fifth and the sixth. They scored the game-winners off Michael Fulmer in the eighth. Both were unearned, after Robbie Grossman muffed a fly ball in left field – his first error in his last 440 games.

The Tigers visit the Royals for a day-night doubleheader today. In the first game, Michael Pineda will start against Brad Keller. Coverage will begin at 1:50 on 99.3 The Lift. It’s a make-up for a game that was rained out April 17th. In the night game, Alex Faedo will pitch against Daniel Lynch. Coverage will begin at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Faedo will serve as the Tigers’ 27th player for the doubleheader today. Detroit has also brought reliever Drew Carlton up from Toledo to provide an additional arm. Starter Garrett Hill has been sent down.

The Brewers lost to the Pirates 8-6. Pittsburgh surged ahead with three runs in the top of the ninth. Milwaukee made it close with a two-run Andrew McCutcheon homer in the bottom of the inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback.

The Brewers have today off, and begin a short series at Minnesota tomorrow. Jason Alexander will start against Josh Winder.

Reliever Gregory Soto will represent the Tigers on this summer’s American League All Star Team. He’ll join teammate Miguel Cabrera, who was added to the squad as a legacy selection last week. Pitchers Corbin Burnes and Josh Hader will represent Milwaukee on the National League All Star Team. The All Star Game will be played a week from tomorrow.

Guts Frisbee

Whiskey Discs from Marquette won the 64th annual Coca Cola International Frisbee Tournament yesterday, defeating the local Shottle Bop team 2-1 in the championship match at the Hancock Driving Park. It’s the first time they have drunk from the Julius T. Nachazel Cup.

Shottle Bop defeated the defending champion Boomtown Saints in the semifinal. Marquette’s UP Hardwood was fourth and Hancock’s Monte Carlo and Marquette’s Flow tied for fifth.

It was a clean sweep in trophies for Marquette. In addition to the Nachazel Cup for winning the tournament, Trevor Bratonia was named MVP and Connor Steer and Luke Lahtinen won the Jon Davis/Dan Thornton Spirit of Guts Award.

It is believed to be the first all-UP final since 1978.
