In hockey last night…
– Houghton edged Marquette 2-1. P.J. Donnelly gave the Gremlins an early lead, and Dawson McKay scored the game-winner early in the second period. Congratulations to Houghton coach Corey Markham on his 300th career victory.
– Hancock blanked Jeffers 8-0 in a game that ended after two periods because of the mercy rule. Teddy and Bryce Randell each scored twice, and Alex Nordstrom, Austin Salani, Petr Anderson and Bradley Randell added one each.
Marquette and Houghton will meet in the championship game of the local JV hockey tournament. The Redmen edged Calumet 4-3 in semifinal action yesterday. The Gremlins mercied Hancock 9-0. The Bulldogs and Copper Kings will meet in the consolation match this afternoon at 1:30. The Gremlins and Redmen will play for the title tomorrow at 3:00. Both games will be played at the Colosseum.
In girls basketball last evening…
– Houghton defeated Marquette 61-55.
– Calumet downed West Iron County 52-40.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell reclaimed the Torch Lake Trophy with a 56-36 win over Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Kierstyn Codere led the Lakes with 16 points. MacKenzie LePage added 12. Paige Isaacson and Bailey Poyhonen each scored 11 for the Blue Bolts.
– Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Jeffers 57-34.
– Chassell dumped Watersmeet 76-41.
– Ontonagon shut down Bessemer 55-20.
In boys hoops last night…
– Houghton lost to Kingsford 48-33.
– Calumet fell to Westwood 38-30.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City remained unbeaten with an 83-39 victory over Watersmeet.

Finlandia
The Finlandia women’s basketball team lost 77-65 to Mount Mary last night. Kelsie Richards scored 23 points for the Lions. Taylor Pertile added 18 points, and Molly Berg had 16. Finlandia wrapped up the regular season with a record of 5-20. The Lions will play at the American Collegiate Athletic Association tournament next weekend. The Lions women’s hockey team concludes its season with home games against Aurora University. Faceoffs are at 7:15 tonight, and 2:00 tomorrow at the Houghton County Arena.
MTU/NMU
The 17th-ranked Michigan Tech women’s basketball team rode a strong first half to an 80-63 win over Ferris State last night. Elizabeth Kelliher led a balanced Huskies attack with 16 points and 16 rebounds. It was the seventh-straight win for Tech.
The MTU men’s team made a strong bid to upset the third-ranked Bulldogs, but fell 89-84 in overtime. The Huskies were in position to win the game, but a Ferris State three-pointer with less than a second remaining forced the extra period. Kyle Monroe led Tech with 35 points and 10 rebounds.
Both Tech teams entertain Lake Superior State tomorrow afternoon. The women’s contest tips off at 1:00, and the men’s at 3:00.
The Northern Michigan University women’s squad got past Lake Superior State 60-56 last night. The Wildcats men’s team lost to the Lakers 80-68. Both Wildcats teams host Ferris State tomorrow afternoon.
The Michigan Tech hockey team entertains Arizona State this weekend. Faceoffs are at 7:07 tonight and tomorrow night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
The NMU hockey team has the weekend off.

The Calumet Wolverines entertain the Marquette Mutineers tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 at the Colosseum.
The Portage Lake Pioneers visit the De Pere Deacons tomorrow night.

The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. Tomáš Tatar scored Detroit’s only goal. Jimmy Howard made 28 saves, and took the loss in net. The Wings visit the Nashville Predators tomorrow night. Pregame coverage begins at 7:40 on 99.3 The Lift.
