MLB

The Tigers have traded reliever Joe Jiménez to the Braves. In exchange, Detroit gets third baseman and corner outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy and left-handed pitcher Jake Higginbotham. Malloy is 22 years old, and was the top-rated position player in Atlanta’s minor league system. He advanced quickly from Single A to Triple A last season. Higginbotham is 26, and spent last season as a reliever in Double A.

Detroit also selected right-hander Mason Englert from the Rangers in the Rule 5 draft. Englert averaged better than a strikeout per inning at High-A and Double A last season.

The Brewers took right-hander Gus Varland from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 Draft. Varland was a highly-regarded prospect, but struggled the last two seasons after undergoing Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.

Rule 5 draftees must be held on their new clubs’ 26-man roster all of next season, or be offered back to their former teams.
