Free throws based on team fouls will be handled differently in high school basketball beginning this fall. The National Federation of State High School Associations approved the change Monday. Currently, teams get a bonus one-and-one opportunity after their opponent commits six fouls in a half, and two shots beginning with the 10th foul. The new rule eliminates the one-and-one entirely. Teams will get two shots beginning with their opponents’ fifth foul in each quarter, with the count resetting with each new quarter. The Federation says studies indicate the change could reduce injuries that occur while battling for rebounds. The Michigan High School Athletic Association follows the National Federation’s rules.

NBA

The Nuggets outscored the Lakers 132-126 in the opening game of the Western Conference finals last night.

The Eastern Conference finals begin this evening, as the Heat visit the Celtics.

The Spurs will have the first pick in the upcoming NBA Draft. San Antonio is expected to select French standout Victor Wembanyama, after winning the draft lottery last night. The Hornets won the second pick. The Pistons, who finished with the worst record in the league last year, dropped to pick number five.

NHL

The NHL Eastern Conference finals begin tonight, as the Panthers visit the Hurricanes.

MLB

The Tigers broke out to an early lead, and shut down the Pirates 4-0 last night. Michael Lorenzen struck out seven over six innings to earn the win. Detroit scored in the first on an RBI single by Javier Báez, and a double by Spencer Torkelson. They scored two more in the third, when Torkelson scored on an errant pickoff throw by Pittsburgh pitcher Luis L. Ortiz, who then uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Akil Baddoo to score.

The Tigers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Eduardo Rodriguez will start against Rich Hill. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit prospect Colt Keith hit for the cycle and more last night. Playing for the Double-A Erie Seawolves, Keith smacked two singles, a double, a triple, and two home runs in six at-bats. He drove in seven runs, and scored three times.

Brian Anderson’s sixth-inning home run provided the winning margin, as the Brewers shaded the Cardinals 3-2 last evening. Joey Weimer also homered. Milwaukee starter Wade Miley left the game in the second inning with a left lat strain, and is expected to be placed on the injured list.

The Brewers visit the Cardinals again tonight. Corbin Burnes will pitch against Matthew Liberatore.

After a rough outing Monday night, Milwaukee designated pitcher Gus Varland for assignment yesterday. Varland was taken from the Dodgers in the Rule Five draft last winter. If no team claims him, he must be offered back to L-A. Reliever JB Bukauskas has been called up from Nashville.
