Love Struggles as Packers Fall – Monday Sports Wrap

High School

The date and time for Calumet’s Division Six football regional championship match against Standish-Sterling has been set. The teams will meet at Standish Central High School Saturday at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.

College Basketball

The Finlandia University men’s basketball fell to Wisconsin-River Falls 83-60 Saturday, in the consolation game at the Merrill Thompson Classic in Superior. B.J. Williams led the Lions with 17 points.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team wrapped up its regular season with a 2-0 loss to Northern Michigan University yesterday. Those teams will meet again in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament tomorrow. The Huskies are seeded fourth, and the Wildcats are seeded fifth. The game will start at 1:00 at Kearly Stadium.

College Volleyball

The 22nd-ranked Tech volleyball team swept Lake Superior State 3-0 Saturday. Anna Jonynas led the Huskies with 12 kills and 10 digs.

College Football

The MTU football team pounded Northwood University 34-0 Saturday. The Huskies took advantage of four Timberwolves turnovers, including an interception that Michael Bates Jr. returned 100 yards for a touchdown. Jared Smith ran for 123 yards and a touchdown.

The NMU football squad lost 33-21 at Saginaw Valley State.

The Finlandia University football team dropped a 28-2 decision to Greenville University Saturday afternoon.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech hockey team salvaged a weekend split by blanking Lake Superior State 2-0 Saturday night. Both Huskies goals came in the first period, off the sticks of Trenton Bliss and Colin Swoyer. Blake Pietila stopped 20 shots to earn his second shutout of the season.

The NMU hockey team outscored Boston University 6-2 Saturday night, to complete a weekend sweep.

The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 6-2 at Concordia-Moorhead Saturday. Lauren Benoit and Jayde Pederson scored, as the Lions were outshot 44-14.

The Lions men’s team fell 7-0 at Bethel College Saturday. The Lions were outshot 41-17.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers split their weekend series against the Marquette Mutineers, falling 8-5 on Friday, and earning a 4-3 overtime victory Saturday night.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings bombed the Vegas Golden Knights 5-2 last evening. Pius Suter and Tyler Bertuzzi each had a goal and an assist. Rookie Lucas Raymond netted his sixth tally of the season. Thomas Greiss made 38 saves. Dylan Larkin returned after missing three games because of a family emergency.

The Wings host the Edmonton Oilers tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons are off until Wednesday, when they visit the Houston Rockets. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

Jordan Love struggled in his first NFL start, and the Green Bay Packers fell 13-7 to the Kansas City Chiefs yesterday. The KC defense pressured Love all through the game, and kept the Pack off the scoreboard until late in the fourth quarter.

The Detroit Lions had the weekend off.

In last night’s contest, the Tennessee Titans returned two Matthew Stafford interceptions for touchdowns, and defeated the Los Angeles Rams 28-16.
