MLB – Tigers Edge A’s
Yoenis Cespedes’ three-run homer powered the Detroit Tigers to a 3-2 victory over the Oakland Athletics yesterday. With Alfredo Simon away from the team dealing with a family emergency, reliever Alex Wilson started the game for Detroit. He turned in three scoreless innings, as did Kyle Ryan, who was called up from Toledo at the last minute to fill in for Simon, but didn’t arrive at the ballpark until less than an hour before game time. Ryan earned the win.
The Tigers continue their West Coast trip as they open a series against the Los Angeles Angels tonight. Buck Farmer will start in place of Kyle Lobstein, who’s on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. Kendall Graveman will counter for L-A. Hear the first pitch at 10:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Justin Verlander has experienced no soreness in his achy triceps muscle since throwing a simulated game on Tuesday. Manager Brad Ausmus said that Verlander will probably make a rehab start for the Toledo Mud Hens on Sunday.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the San Francisco Giants 3-1 yesterday. Starting on short rest, Mike Fiers gave up two runs over five innings, and took the loss.
The Brewers have today off, and open a home series against the Diamondbacks tomorrow night. Shortstop Jean Segura is expected to return, after missing two weeks with a broken finger. Jimmy Nelson will start against Rubby De La Rosa.
