Local HS Hockey Teams Sweep – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey last night…

  • Houghton upended Brighton 6-2. After a scoreless first period, goals by Jack Sayen, Noah Maillette  and Jace Deforge put the Gremlins up 3-0 heading into the final frame. Deforge and Hudson Markham added to the lead before Bulldogs Eddie Wheeler and Mitchell Wysocki finally found the net. Maillette’s second goal of the game wrapped up the scoring in the final minute. Deforge wound up with a five-point night – two goals and three assists. The Gremlins outshot the Bulldogs 26-19. Cooper Flachs got the win in net.
  • Calumet blanked Capital City 2-0. Erik Loukus scored the game winner 4:04 into the game, assisted by Nate Londo and Liam Pomroy. Brendan Boberg sealed the win with an empty netter with 18 seconds to go. Beau Jukuri earned the shutout win as the Copper Kings outshot the Capitals 38-23. Hear the game replay here.
  • Hancock pounded Novi 6-2. Connor Helminen scored twice, and the Bulldogs got one each from Tyler Axford, Brady Axford, Jackson Sintkowski and Tevin Stukel. Adam Mikkola stopped 32 shots.
  • Jeffers routed Negaunee 8-0 in a game that ended after the second period because of the mercy rule. Brit Heinonen had four goals and two assists, Benton Rajala and Cody Turner each had a goal and three assists. Brogan Turner and Griffin Heinonen also scored. Kasen Helminen claimed the shutout in net, as the ‘Dogs outshot the Miners 39-6.

On today’s hockey schedule…

  • Houghton welcomes Novi at the SDC – 12:40 broadcast on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.
  • Calumet entertains Brighton – 6:40 broadcast on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock hosts Capital City at 1:00.

In high school boys basketball last night…

  • Ontonagon stopped Hancock 63-35.
  • Calumet outscored Jeffers 53-40. Gavin Sturos scored 17 for the Copper Kings, and Kent Koskela added 14. Landon Larson netted 14 for the Jets.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 66-25.

In girls action…

  • Houghton downed Baraga 67-52. Eva Gerard had 27 points and eight rebounds for the Gremlins. Ellie Hainault scored 20, and Ruby Zawada added 15. Kara Roberts paced the Vikings with 23 points, and Mya Hendrickson had 14.
  • Calumet got past Westwood 48-42.
  • Hancock smothered Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 62-7.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Wakefield-Marenisco 68-53. Emily Jokela and Cleo Milkey each scored 24 for the Lakes, and Milkey passed the 1,000 career point mark.
  • West Iron County dispatched Forest Park 55-33.

College Hockey

Lee Parks’ goal with 1:43 remaining lifted the 10th ranked Massachusetts-Lowell hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Michigan Tech in the opening round of the inaugural Coachella Valley Cactus Cup tournament in Palm Desert, California last night. Isaac Gordon and Elias Janssen scored for the Huskies. Derek Mullahy made 25 saves. Tech was held to a season-low 15 shots on goal. 

The Huskies will face Holy Cross in the consolation match this evening. The River Hawks will play Nebraska-Omaha in the title game.

College Basketball

Both Michigan Tech teams play at Davenport University today.

Both Northern Michigan University teams play at Grand Valley.

Great Lakes Hockey League

The Portage Lake Pioneers cruised past the M and M Shamrocks 6-1 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines fell 5-4 to the De Pere Deacons last night, and visit the Shamrocks tonight.

NHL

The Red Wings welcome the Jets tonight. Because of programming conflicts, there will be no radio broadcast.

NBA

The Pistons pulled out a 98-94 victory over the Hornets last night. Tobias Harris had 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The Pistons host the Timberwolves tonight.

Detroit coach J.B. Bickerstaff said yesterday that the surgery to repair Jaden Ivey’s broken leg went well, and that there was no additional damage found. There’s an outside chance he could return very late in the season.
