Local Baseball, Softball Teams Fall in Tourney – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
Norway dominated the Division Four baseball and softball competition in Ironwood on Friday.

Play Ball Baseball SoftballIn softball, the Knights needed only four innings to stop the first-year Jeffers Jets 15-0. Norway posted a seven-run third as they advanced to the championship game. Hancock won the other semifinal, scoring three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to eliminate Ironwood 4-3. In the finale, Norway scored three in the first, five in the second, and put up eight in the sixth to outdistance Hancock 18-1. Bobbi Hulce put the exclamation point on the championship with a three run homer.

In baseball, Ironwood defeated L’Anse 4-2 in eight innings in the first semifinal.  In the second, Norway jumped out to an early lead, and topped Hancock 7-2. The championship was all offense with Norway prevailing 20-10 over Ironwood.

 

The Division Three baseball and softball district tournaments will conclude today at Gladstone.

In baseball…
– Calumet will play Negaunee at 9:30. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Gladstone faces Superior Central at 11:30.
– The championship game will begin at 1:30. If Calumet reaches that game, we’ll broadcast it on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In softball…
– Gladstone will play Iron Mountain at 9:30.
– Houghton takes on Westwood at 11:30.
– The championship game will follow. We will broadcast it if Houghton advances, and Calumet doesn’t reach the baseball final.

The Upper Peninsula Track and Field Finals will be held today at Kingsford.

Jordan Zimmermann returned from a 12-day layoff, and led the Detroit Tigers to a 10-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox Friday night. Zimmermann gave up two runs over 5-2/3rds innings. He left the game with a 3-2 lead, thanks to early home runs from James McCann and Victor Martinez. Each of them finished the game with three hits. Detroit added a run in the bottom of the sixth, then broke the game open with two runs in the seventh, and four in the eighth.

The Tigers host the Sox again this afternoon. Mike Pelfrey will start against Chris Sale. Hear the first pitch at 4:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit first baseman Miguel Cabrera left Friday’s game in the seventh inning with tightness in his back. Team officials say they expect he’ll be ready to play today. The Tigers also plan to bring pitcher Shane Greene off the disabled list today. He’s missed more than a month with a troublesome blister on his throwing hand.

Jimmy Nelson gave up six runs over four innings, as the Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-3 Friday night. Jonathan Villar homered in the losing effort.

The Brewers continue that set at Philadelphia this afternoon. Junior Guerra will pitch against Jeremy Hellickson.

NHL
The NHL Stanley Cup final will continue tonight. The Pittsburgh Penguins lead the San Jose Sharks two games to none.

NBA
The Golden State Warriors and Cleveland Cavaliers will continue the NBA championship series tomorrow night. The Warriors lead the set one game to none.
