MLB
Eddie Rosario’s home run in the eighth inning lifted the Minnesota Twins to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Tigers yesterday afternoon. With an off-day today, and the rotation decimated by injuries, manager Ron Gardenhire elected to go with a “bullpen start.”  Buck Farmer opened, and turned in two scoreless innings. He left as the Twins scored twice in the third. Zach Reininger replaced him, and gave up two more runs in the fourth. Detroit got a run on a Jim Adduci double in the second inning, and tied the contest with three runs in the sixth. Alex Wilson gave up Rosario’s game-winning shot in the eighth.

The Tigers have today off, and host the Chicago Cubs tomorrow night. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Kyle Hendricks. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit had planned to bring Jacob Turner back up from Toledo to start yesterday’s game, but were prevented from doing so by a technicality. Turner had been designated for assignment less than 10 days ago, and so could not be recalled. Instead, Daniel Stumpf was brought up, and turned in two scoreless innings of relief.

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Saint Louis Cardinals 2-1 yesterday. Jhoulys Chacín turned in six scoreless innings. Mike Moustakas drove in both Milwaukee runs with a double in the second inning. The Cards’ only run came on a solo homer of Jeremy Jeffress in the eighth.

The win moved Milwaukee a half-game ahead of Saint Louis in the race for the second National League wild card spot. The Brewers host the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Chase Anderson will pitch against Homer Bailey.

NFL
The Detroit Lions have signed journeyman cornerback Sterling Moore and former 49ers safety Marcus Cromartie. Meanwhile, there are reports that the Lions will place  linebacker and special teams standout Steve Longa on injured reserve, after he tore an ACL in Friday’s exhibition game.

High School
The Lake Linden-Hubbell volleyball team dominated the annual West Iron County tournament Saturday. The Lakes finished 7-3, with wins over Baraga and L’Anse, and split sets with West Iron County, Ironwood and Stephenson. Joslynn Perala had 25 kills, 35 digs and a dozen aces.
