In high school volleyball yesterday, the Copper Mountain Conference held its first preseason tournament. Lake Linden took the title, defeating Jeffers in the championship game 2-0 (25-17, 25-11). The Lakes went undefeated in pool play, with wins against Watersmeet (25-20, 25-10), Chassell (25-15, 25-27, 15-9) and Bessemer (25-18, 25-17). Chassell defeated Wakefield-Marenisco (25-22, 23-25, 15-11) to win the second seed match. Baraga claimed the third seed match over Watersmeet (25-18, 25-21). Bessemer downed Dollar Bay (13-25, 25-19, 15-6) to take the fourth seed match.

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and begin a home set against the Cleveland Indians tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Adam Plutko. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell behind early, and were routed 12-2 by the Saint Louis Cardinals last night. Gio Gonzalez gave up two runs in the first inning, six in the second, and another in the fourth. He labored on through the fifth, and took the loss.
The Brewers continue the home series against the Cardinals tonight. Adrian Houser will start against Miles Mikolas.
Milwaukee remains in third place in the National League Central Division, 5.5 games behind the Cardinals, and 2.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs.
Mike Moustakas had to leave last night’s game after he was struck on the hand by a line drive at third base. X-rays showed no structural damage, and he’s considered day-to-day.

The Detroit Lions’ search for a backup quarterback continues. The team has signed Luis Perez, who recently completed a whopping 52 percent of his passes in eight games with the Birmingham Iron in the AAF league. Current backup Tom Savage returned to practice yesterday, after having missed time because of a concussion.
