In the high school baseball tournament…
• Because of the rain, the Division Three district tournament scheduled for Saturday was pushed back to today. The host Houghton Gremlins will face Hancock at 12:00 in the first semifinal, with coverage on 97.7 The Wolf. Negaunee and Iron Mountain will tangle in the second semifinal at 2:30. The championship game will be played at 5:00, with coverage on 97.7 The Wolf.
In the high school softball tournament…
• The Division Three district tournament set for Saturday was also delayed until today because of the rain. The host Calumet Copper Kings will play Negaunee at 12:00. Houghton will face Westwood at 2:00. The winners will meet in the title match at 4:00. We’ll broadcast both semifinals on KBear 102.3, and will also air the championship game, if the Gremlins and/or the Kings advance.
At the U.P. track and field championships at Kingsford Saturday…
• Marquette won the Division I boys title. Houghton finished third, after Kingsford. Calumet placed ninth. Luke Hill of the Gremlins won the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Brody Mattila took the 300-meter hurdles, and the Houghton 4×800 relay team placed first. See full results here.
• Sault Ste. Marie earned the Division I girls crown. Houghton placed fifth, and Calumet seventh. The Gremlins’ 4×800 relay team won, and Tessa Rautiola took the 3200-meter run. Calumet’s Caitlin Strom won the pole vault. See full results here.
• Pickford won the Division II boys title. Hancock finished eighth. Myles Lewis won the shot put. See full results here.
• Bark River-Harris claimed the girls Division II championship. Hancock finished fifth, and Jeffers 10th. The Hancock 4×800 relay team won. See full results here.
• Newberry won a close battle for first place in the Division III boys competition. Lake Linden-Hubbell was a close third, Chassell sixth. L’Anse and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City tied for eighth. Matthew Jokela of the Lakes claimed the 400-meter run. Gabe Popko won the discus throw, and the 4×400 relay team took first. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta won the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter runs. • Lake Linden-Hubbell captured the Division III girls title. Ontonagon was seventh, Dollar Bay-Tamarack city ninth, Ewen-Trout Creek 13th, and Baraga 14th. The Lakes’ Emily Jokela won the 100 and 400-meter dashes and the 300-meter hurdles. The 4×200 relay team took first place. Ontonagon’s 4×400 relay team won. Kiera Isaacson of the Blue Bolts took the high jump. See full results here.
NHL
The Panthers dispatched the Rangers 2-1 in the Eastern Conference championship series last night. Florida wins the series 4-2, and advances to the Stanley Cup finals.
The Oilers host the Stars tonight. Edmonton has a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference championship series.
MLB
The Tigers dropped a 6-3 decision to the Red Sox yesterday. Reese Olson pitched into the sixth, and took the loss. He was charged with five runs on six hits. Gio Urshela homered for Detroit.
The Tigers visit the Red Sox again this afternoon. Casey Mize will pitch against Brayan Bello. Coverage will begin at 1:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
Mark Canha’s hip problem does not seem serious enough to send him to the injured list. He’s been diagnosed with a psoas strain, and will rehab with the team’s training staff.
Willy Adames’ RBI single in the bottom of the 10th lifted the Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the White Sox.
The Brewers host the White Sox again today. Freddy Peralta will start against Nick Nastrini.
