After years of discussion, the Marquette High School sports teams have a new nickname. At its meeting last evening, the board of education voted to name the school’s athletic squads the “Sentinals.” The school’s former nicknames – “Redmen” for boys, and “Redettes” for girls – had come under fire because of their association with stereotypical Native American imagery.

The Pistons host the Hornets tomorrow. Coverage will start at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

Tyler Nevin is no longer a Tiger. After placing him on waivers last week, Detroit has transferred his rights to the Orioles in exchange for cash considerations.

NFL

There are reports that the Lions have signed three-time Pro Bowl tight end Zach Ertz. He’ll give the team some depth, as starter Sam LaPorta deals with a gimpy knee. Backup Brock Wright left Sunday’s game with an arm injury. Backup James Mitchell was recently placed on injured reserve. In his 11th season, Ertz requested his release from the Cardinals after seven games last fall.
