High School
In high school boys’ basketball last night…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell outscored Hancock 22-3 in the third quarter, and pulled away to a 64-32 victory. Brett Poissant led all scorers with 24 for the Lakes. Tyler Roose added 14. Cole Kemppainen had 14 points for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet shut down Dollar Bay 50-23.
– Chassell fell to Republic-Michigamme 73-48. See video highlights from the game here.
– L’Anse lost to Westwood 52-47.
– Baraga dropped a 66-65 heartbreaker to Watersmeet in overtime. Ray Miron scored 20 for the Vikings.
– Ontonagon fell to Ironwood 55-44.
– The score of Ewen-Trout Creek’s game against Wakefield-Marenisco was not reported.
In boys’ action tonight…
– Houghton entertains Escanaba.
– L’Anse hosts West Iron County.
– Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Hurley.
In high school girls’ basketball last night… Houghton defeated Gwinn 46-34.
On the girls’ schedule this evening…
– Calumet plays at Hancock. Our pregame coverage begins around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. There will be no JV game, so the varsity contest will begin at 7:20.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell welcomes Ontonagon.
– Dollar Bay plays at Jeffers.
– Baraga visits Chassell.
In high school hockey tonight… Calumet skates at Houghton.
The Gremlins are ranked second in the state this week in Division Three by the Michigan High School Hockey Coaches Association. Hancock is rated 11th.
MTU Hockey Ranked Fifth
After splitting their games with Minnesota-Duluth last weekend, the Michigan Tech hockey team dropped from fourth to fifth in both the USCHO.com and USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine polls this week.
Tyler Scarlett earned the Al Bovard Award as Michigan Tech football’s most valuable player as the Huskies handed out their team awards over the weekend. The Huskies’ quarterback ended up his Tech career with 14 school records. It’s his third MVP award. The Fred Baird Award for the outstanding defensive player went to defensive tackle Tanner Agen. Kicker Garrett Mead was the Daniel Dopp Memorial Award winner as the top special teams player. Nelson Wienke was named Defensive Lineman of the Year. DeShawn Nelson was selected as the team’s Defensive Back of the Year. The Offensive Back of the Year and Iron Man Awards went to running back Charlie Leffingwell. Frank Vruwink was the team’s Offensive Lineman of the Year for the second straight season. Fellow offensive lineman Josh Knoepke was the Huskies’ Outstanding Freshman. Senior defensive end Cameron Allen earned both the Harold Meese Sportsmanship Award and the Ted Kearly Award. The Kearly Award is given to a player who exhibited passion, pride and integrity. Punter Ryan VanGoethem picked up the Omer LaJenunesse Award for scholastic achievement. Read more about the award winners here.
NMU Hoops Teams Fall
Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams fell to Wayne State yesterday. The men dropped a 67-43 decision. Jordan Perez was the only Wildcat in double figures, with 11 points. The women lost 69-57. Alyssa Colla led the Wildcats with 20 points.
Finlandia Men Downstate
The Finlandia men’s basketball team is in Livonia for the Madonna University Crusader Classic. The Lions will face Madonna this evening, and Rochester College tomorrow afternoon.
NHL – Red Wings Prepare for Blue Jackets
The Red Wings host Columbus tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons’ Win Streak Ends
The Pistons’ modest two-game winning streak ended with a 113-91 loss to the Clippers last night. Jodie Meeks had 20 points for Detroit. Andre Drummond added 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds, The Pistons host the Mavericks tomorrow night. Tipoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Saints defeated the Bears 30-15. If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you need to have picked at least 15 games correctly to be eligible to be our weekly winner.
