– Calumet lost both of its games to Detroit Jesuit Friday and Saturday by identical 6-1 scores.
– At the Sault Lions Showcase Saturday, Hancock lost 2-1 to Plymouth. Friday night, Hancock fell 5-3 to Birmingham Brother Rice, the top-ranked team in Division Two.
– L’Anse defeated Medford 7-1 in the consolation match at the Merrill Tournament on Saturday. The Purple Hornets fell to Sparta in the opening round on Friday.

MTU Hockey Wins
The 11th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team split with seventh-rated Bowling Green over the weekend, falling 3-2 on Saturday, after earning a 4-3 victory Friday night.
Both Tech basketball teams claimed victories over Grand Valley State Saturday. The women improved to 13-1 on the season, with a 61-52 win.
The Tech men’s team also used a strong second half to defeat the Lakers 77-65.
NMU Hockey Swept at Huntsville
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost both of its games at Alabama-Huntsville… falling to the Chargers 3-2 Saturday night, and 2-1 on Friday.
The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team earned a 67-52 victory over Ferris State Saturday. The men’s team lost to the Bulldogs 61-58.
Finlandia
Thomas Clayton and James Devlin scored third-period goals, as the Finlandia men’s hockey team edged Northland College 2-1 yesterday afternoon. Walker Enstad made 24 saves. Friday night, the Lions gave up two goals in the third period, and fell to Northland 3-1.
The Finlandia women’s team lost twice to St. Norbert College… 10-1 Saturday night, and 2-1 on Friday.
The Finlandia men’s basketball team plays at Clarke University tonight.
GLHL
In Great Lakes Hockey League play Saturday night, Levi Erkkila’s goal 1:03 into overtime lifted the Calumet Wolverines to their first win of the season, 6-5 over the Fox Cities Ice Dogs. Calumet peppered Fox Cities’ goalie Drew Chaney with 56 shots.
On Friday, the Portage Lake Pioneers overcame an early deficit, and defeated the Ice Dogs 7-3.
NHL – Red Wings Stun Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres drove Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek from the game by scoring three quick goals in the first period. Tom McCollum replaced him, and earned his first career win, as Detroit came back to take a 6-4 victory. Henrik Zetterberg scored three goals in the third period to power the comeback. Detroit hosts Minnesota tomorrow night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Face Hawks
The Pistons have won 10 of their last 12 games, and play at Atlanta in a Martin Luther King Day matinee today. Tip-off is at 2:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NFL – Patriots to Face Seahawks in Super Bowl
The Packers took an early 16-0 lead in yesterday’s NFC Championship game… but the Seahawks used a late surge to end Green Bay’s playoff run with a 28-22 overtime victory. The Packers appeared to be in control when they made their fourth interception of the game with five minutes remaining, and a 12-point lead. But, after just three plays, and a short punt, Seattle drove 69 yards for a touchdown. The Seahawks then recovered an onside kick, and took the lead with a touchdown and two-point conversion. Mason Crosby forced overtime with his fifth field goal of the game, but Seattle scored the winning touchdown on the first possession of overtime.
The Seahawks will face the Patriots in the Super Bowl a week from Sunday. New England blew out the Colts 45-7 last night.

MLB – Scherzer Signs with Nats; Kelly with Marlins
Several media outlets are reporting that former Tigers’ pitcher Max Scherzer has agreed to a seven-year deal with the Nationals. No one is saying how much the contract may be worth.
Longtime Detroit utility player Don Kelly has signed a minor-league deal with the Miami Marlins.
Fox Sports is reporting that the Brewers are talking with the Rangers about a trade for starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo will be a free agent after this season.
