Lions Trade Slay – Friday Sports Wrap

NFL

The Detroit Lions have traded cornerback Darius Slay to the Philadelphia Eagles. In exchange, the Lions will get Philly’s third and fifth-round picks in the upcoming NFL draft. In seven seasons in Detroit, Slay was named to three Pro Bowls. But, at age 29, the Lions were reluctant to give him the contract extension he wanted. The Eagles are making him one of the highest-paid corners in the league, with a three-year deal with $30 million guaranteed, and a possibility of $50 million.

MLB

The Milwaukee Brewers have assigned four players to the minor leagues. Ryon Healy, Mark Mathias, and former Detroit Tiger Ronny Rodriguez were contending for spots on the bench as utility players. David Freitas is a catcher.

Major League Baseball has committed to continue paying its usual spring training allowance to minor league players. MLB made a similar commitment to its major league players last week. Baseball players receive salaries only during the regular season.

WCHA

Former Brighton high school defenseman Tim Erkkila has committed to playing college hockey at Northern Michigan University. Erkkila was a high school dream team selection after the 2018-2019 season. He skated for the Fairbanks Ice Dogs of the NAHL this past season.
