Lions, Packers Sign Defenders – Wednesday Sports Wrap

NFL

In advance of the NFL draft, the Green Bay Packers have added some defensive depth. Defensive tackle Gerald Willis and defensive end Jamal Davis were claimed off waivers yesterday, after they were cut by the Miami Dolphins. Each played just a handful of downs for Miami last season.

The Detroit Lions have re-signed cornerbacks Mike Ford and Dee Virgin. Both have spent the past two seasons in Detroit, and were exclusive-rights free agents.

NHL

The NHL’s latest proposal to resume play would locate games in four cities – one for each division. The league is considering delaying its draft. The draft is scheduled for late June, but, if regular-season play has not been completed, some other system would need to be adopted to establish the order in which teams would make their picks.

MLB

Major League Baseball’s plan to reduce the number of minor league teams is advancing. The current agreement between MLB and the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues expires at the end of this season. MLB would like to take a more active role in operating minor league teams. The proposal would eliminate 42 current teams, including Detroit’s Double-A affiliate in Erie, Pennsylvania. The National Association had initially fought the proposal, but the prospect of significantly decreased revenue this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic has weakened its resistance.
