The Detroit Lions have fired general manager Bob Quinn and head coach Matt Patricia.
”It clearly wasn’t working,” team owner Sheila Ford Hamp told reporters in an online meeting yesterday. The Lions are coming off a lackluster 31-25 loss to Houston on Thanksgiving, and were shut out for the first time in more than a decade at Carolina a week ago. Their 4-7 record so far this season marked little improvement over last season, when they won just three games.
Patricia never endeared himself to the players, although he adjusted the overbearing style that alienated many of them in his first season. Still, many former players were happy to see him go, including retired linebacker Stephen Tulloch, who tweeted, “Best news I’ve heard all year. The city of Detroit and its fans deserve SO MUCH BETTER.”
Offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. The GM duties will be split among several front office staff members.
Hamp promised an “an extremely thorough and comprehensive search” for both a coach and GM.
The Packers will host the Bears in the Sunday night game on 99.3 The Lift. Mitchell Trubisky will start at quarterback for Chicago, in place of the injured Nick Foles. The Packers have promoted linebacker De’Jon Harris and running back Mike Weber from the practice squad, as COVID-19 replacements.
The Ravens-Steelers game, which was delayed by COVID-19 diagnoses from Thursday to today, has been put off again, and will be played Tuesday night.
The Broncos will host the Saints this afternoon, but they’ll do it without any of their quarterbacks. All four of Denver’s QB’s are under COVID-19 isolation. That will leave the job in the hands of Kendall Hinsch, who played quarterback in high school, and for a couple of seasons at Wake Forest, before switching to wide receiver. Hinsch was signed by the Broncos over the summer as an undrafted free agent, but was cut at the end of training camp. He was re-signed to the practice squad less than a month ago.
