Tyler Bass kicked a 44-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining, as the Buffalo bills defeated the Detroit Lions 16-15 in the preseason opener for both teams. Detroit trailed by 10 heading into the fourth quarter, but came from behind with two Randy Bullock field goals and a 24-yard touchdown run by Craig Reynolds. New Lions quarterback Jared Goff completed seven of nine passes for 56 yards. Listen for Lions regular-season games again this season on 99.3 The Lift.
Reynolds was signed as a free agent late this week. He arrived in Detroit Thursday morning, and didn’t meet his teammates or coaches until just before last night’s contest. He led the team in rushing with 49 yards.
Before last night’s game, the Lions fired head athletic trainer Dave Granito. Head coach Dan Campbell said there was no specific incident that prompted the move, but that the team wanted to go in a “different direction.” He indicated they have a replacement in mind. Assistant athletic trainer Tom Holt is filling in, for now.
The Green Bay Packers open their preseason campaign at home against the Houston Texans tonight.

The Detroit Red Wings are losing a front office leader. Ryan Martin has accepted a new position with the New York Rangers. Martin spent the last 14 years in the Detroit organization. For the past nine seasons, he was the Wings’ assistant general manager, and general manager of the Grand Rapids Griffins. He will take on similar roles in New York.
The Wings have extended their minor-league affiliation with the Toledo Walleye for another three years. The Walleye serve as Detroit’s second-level farm team in the ECHL. The extension also keeps them connected to the Wings’ top American Hockey League farm team in Grand Rapids.
