High School

In high school volleyball tonight…

  • Jeffers hosts Ewen-Trout Creek and Watersmeet in a triangular.
  • L’Anse welcomes Ontonagon for Parents Night.

Calumet High School will open the football playoffs with a Division Six district semifinal Saturday afternoon at Kingsley, just south of Traverse City. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3, with kickoff set for 1:00. Negaunee will play at Boyne City in the other district semifinal.

In other pairings involving Upper Peninsula teams…

  • Division Five – Kingsford hosts Gladwin. Clare and Ogemaw Heights play in the other district semifinal.
  • Division Seven – Menominee entertains Houghton Lake. Charlevoix will play at Traverse City St. Francis in the other district semifinal.
  • Division Eight – Manistique plays at Iron Mountain; Bark River-Harris journeys to East Jordan.
  • Eight Player Division One – Munising plays at Pickford; Norway travels to Ishpeming.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team blanked Roosevelt University 2-0 yesterday. Kiersen Korienek and Emilie Clayton scored for the Huskies, and Bri Barrows stopped six shots in net.

The Northern women’s team blasted Purdue Northwest 5-0.

The Northern men’s team lost 3-1 to Roosevelt in Chicago.

NHL

The Red Wings dropped a 3-2 decision to the Oilers last night. J.T. Compher and Andrew Copp scored for Detroit. Leon Draisaitl’s goal 18 seconds into overtime was the game-winner. Cam Talbot made 31 saves, as the Wings were outshot 34-26.

The Wings will host the Jets Wednesday. Coverage will start at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Pistons visit the Heat this evening.

MLB

The world series continues tomorrow, as the Yankees host the Dodgers. L-A leads the Fall Classic 2-0.

NFL

The Lions blew out the Titans 52-14 yesterday. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 127 yards and a touchdown. Jared Goff threw three touchdown passes. Running back David Montgomery ran for a touchdown, and passed for another. Kalif Raymond returned a punt 90 yards for a score. At 6-`1, Detroit is off to its best start since 1956.

For the second week in a row, Brandon McManus kicked a winning field goal on the final play of the game, as the Packers scrambled past the Jaguars 30-27 yesterday. The final drive was led by quarterback Malik Willis, who entered the game early in the third quarter after Jordan Love left with a groin injury. Josh Jacobs rushed for 125 yards and two touchdowns.

Love will be examined today, to see how serious the injury is.

In the Sunday night contest, the 49ers held off the Cowboys 34-20.

In tonight’s game, the Giants visit the Steelers. Coverage will begin at 7:30 on 99.3 the Lift.
