Tigers Blast Royals
The Tigers erupted for six runs in the third inning, and cruised past the Royals 9-5 yesterday. Detroit took a quick lead with two runs in the second, but Kansas City got those back in the top of the third. In the bottom of the third, the Tigers sent 10 men to the plate. The outburst was highlighted by consecutive run-scoring doubles by Don Kelly, Nick Castellanos and Alex Avila. Justin Verlander went seven innings, and gave up four runs on six hits.
The Tigers host the Royals again this evening. Max Scherzer will pitch against Jason Vargas. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on FM 99.3 and AM 1400, WCCY.
The win moved Detroit within a game of Kansas City in the American League Central Division.
Brewers Fall Again
The Brewers’ late-season slide continued last night with a 6-4 loss to the Marlins. Miami hit Yovani Gallardo hard… scoring six runs on nine hits before forcing him from the game with the bases loaded in the fourth inning. Marco Estrada struck out Marcell Ozuna to end that threat, then pitched four more innings of scoreless relief.
The Brewers continue that home series against the Marlins tonight. Matt Garza will start against Tom Koehler.
The Brewers are now six games behind the Cardinals in the National League Central Division, and a game-and-a-half behind the Pirates. They’re also a game-and-a-half behind in the race for the second wild card slot.
