NHL – Red Wings Fall
The Detroit Red Wings missed the chance to close out their opening-round NHL playoff series at home last night, falling the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-2. Tampa scored the first three goals of the game. Detroit responded with two… both by Tomas Tatar… but the Lightning shut the door with two late goals to force the best-of-seven series to a deciding final game. That game will be played tomorrow evening at Tampa. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
Hockey Hall-of-Famer Marcel Pronovost passed away Sunday. Pronovost played 15 seasons with the Red Wings, and was a member of four Detroit Stanley Cup teams in the 1950s. He won a fifth Cup in his final season in 1967 with the Maple Leafs. Known as a tough, speedy defenseman, he continued his hockey career as a coach and scout. Marcel Pronovost was 84.
MLB – Tigers Win
The Detroit Tigers scored early, and then held on to edge the Minnesota Twins 5-4 last night. Detroit put four on the board in the first inning, powered by home runs from Jose Iglesias and Yoenis Cespedes. They added an insurance marker in the second inning. David Price gave up three runs before leaving in the seventh inning, and earned the win. Joba Chamberlain gave up a run in the eighth. Joakim Soria gave up a leadoff single in the ninth, but then retired the next three batters to get the save.
The Tigers continue that series at Minnesota tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Mike Pelfrey. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
The Cincinnati Reds scored seven runs in the first three innings, and cruised to a 9-6 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Milwaukee starter Jimmy Nelson was charged with all seven of those runs, and took the loss. He gave up six hits, and walked five. The Brewers made it close by scoring four runs in the ninth inning, but couldn’t complete the comeback.
The Brewers continue that set at Cincinnati tonight. Kyle Lohse will pitch against Johnny Cueto.
