Liebner, Monahan Dominate RTK Day One – Sunday Sports Wrap

The Detroit Tigers’ mid-season swoon continued yesterday, with a 9-1 loss to the Houston Astros. Michael Fulmer was charged with seven runs on 10 hits before leaving in the fifth inning. Meanwhile, Detroit managed just three hits, including an RBI double by James McCann in the sixth.

The Tigers have dropped six straight, and 20 of their their last 24 games. They’ll play at Houston again today. Francisco Liriano will pitch against former Tiger Justin Verlander. Pregame coverage will begin at 1:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Verlander and his wife, model Kate Upton, announced yesterday that they are expecting their first child.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ mid-season slide also continued yesterday, with a pair of losses to the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh scored twice off Chase Anderson in the opening inning of the first game, and made that hold up for a 2-1 victory. In the second game, the Brewers were held scoreless until the ninth inning, in a 6-2 defeat. Brent Suter gave up two runs over five innings, and took the loss.

The Brewers have lost five in a row, and conclude that series at Pittsburgh this afternoon. Jhoulys Chacín will start against Joe Musgrove.

Milwaukee has placed slugger Eric Thames and pitcher Junior Guerra on the 10-Day Disabled List. Thames injured a hamstring in Thursday’s contest. Guerra reported soreness in his pitching arm after experiencing control problems in Thursday’s start. Brent Suter was reinstated from the D-L in time to start yesterday’s second game. Infielder Nate Orf was called back from Colorado Springs to fill in for Thames.

Twilight League
Results from Saturday’s games at the annual Leo Durocher Tournament were not reported. Play wraps up today at the Stanton field, with semifinals at 11:00 and 1:00, an the championship game at 3:00. See the full tournament bracket here.
