LaPlant Joins Lions – Saturday Sports Wrap

Morning Sports for Saturday, May 31st:

MLB: Tigers Power Past M’s
The Tigers blasted three home runs, and cruised to a 6-3 victory over the Mariners Friday night. Rajai Davis hit a solo shot. Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer. Victor Martinez knocked a three-run bomb, after Seattle walked Cabrera intentionally. Justin Verlander ran into a little trouble in the second… but was bailed out when Andrew Romine threw Kyle Seager out at the plate. In the fourth, he gave up a two-run homer to Kyle Seager. He then settled in, and pitched into the eighth.

Detroit continues that series at Seattle tonight. Drew Smyly will face Chris Young. Hear the first pitch at 10:10 on AM 1400, WCCY.

Brewers Maul Cubs
The Brewers erupted for five runs in the first inning, on the way to an 11-5 victory over the Cubs Friday night. Ryan Braun homered and drove in three runs. Marco Estrada gave up three runs over six innings to earn the win. The Brewers host the Cubs again this afternoon. Wily Peralta will start against Jason Hammel.

LaPlant to Play Hoops at Finlandia
Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jordan LaPlant will be joining the Finlandia University men’s basketball team this fall. LaPlant is a 6’3″ guard. He comes to Finlandia after playing the last two seasons for Gogebic Community College. As a Samson, Jordan made 134 3-point field goals in two seasons. This past season he helped lead the team to a 20-win season, and led them in scoring with 14.3 points per game.

Jordan played his high school basketball at Ewen-Trout Creek High School, where he was a member of the 2012 All-UP Dream Team.

Pistons Announce Coaching Staff
Former Pistons’ assistant coach Brendan Malone will, indeed, return to the club as an assistant next season. Malone worked under Chuck Daly, and was credited for developing the “Jordan Rules,” the defensive strategy that helped Detroit shut down Michael Jordan while winning back-to-back NBA titles in 1989 and 1990. Bob Beyer and Charles Klask will also join the club as assistant coaches. Last year’s interim coach, John Loyer, is also staying on as an assistant. Rasheed Wallace, Henry Bibby and Bernard Smith will not be retained.

Clinton-Dix Signs with Packers
Former Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix has signed with the Packers. Green Bay chose Clinton-Dix with the 21st pick overall in this spring’s NFL Draft.

Breakers to Bay Run Today
The annual Breakers to Bay Five Mile Run/Walk will begin tomorrow morning at North Canal Park, and end at the KennerDome at Oskar. Walkers will depart at 8:30, and runners will start at 9:00. A free 3/4-mile kids’ race will start at the KennerDome at 10:15. Park at the KennerDome – transportation to the starting point will be provided. MTU Hockey Carnival Today
Michigan Tech will host a Spring Hockey Carnival at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena tomorrow from 4:00 until 6:00. It’s a free event, designed for the whole family. Kids are encouraged to bring their sticks, and play floor hockey. Tech players will run skill sessions, and all kids will get a free poster. The locker room and other hockey facilities will be open for tours. Tomorrow also represents the final chance to purchase Tech season hockey tickets at the discounted price of 225-dollars.
