MLB – Tigers’ Fade Continues
Kyle Lobstein struggled in his return from the disabled list last night, and the Detroit Tigers fell to the Cleveland Indians 8-1. Lobstein gave up a two-run homer in the second inning, and was chased in the fifth as Cleveland scored four times. Meanwhile, Detroit got only four hits off Indians’ starter Josh Tomlin, who filled in for injured scheduled starter Corey Kluber. The loss drops Detroit 12 games under .500. Full details are here.

Detroit shortstop Jose Iglesias has been diagnosed with a chip fracture in the middle finger of his right hand. The injury occurred when he was hit by a pitch while trying to bunt in Thursday night’s game. Team officials say he’ll miss at least two weeks, and could be done for the season.
Before last night’s game, the Tigers brought relievers Jeff Ferrell and Jose Valdez up from Toledo.
The Milwaukee Brewers’ game at Cincinnati was rained out last night. Those teams will play a day-night doubleheader today. In the afternoon game, Matt Garza will start against John Lamb. Wily Peralta will pitch against Keyvius Sampson in the nightcap.

In high school football Friday night, L’Anse came from a dozen points down in the closing minutes, and got past West Iron County 30-26. See video highlights from the game here.

MTU Soccer Falls, Volleyball Wins Two
The MTU soccer team couldn’t hold a 2-0 lead, and lost 3-2 at Winona State last night. Game details are here. The Huskies will play at Saint Cloud State Sunday afternoon.
The MTU volleyball team began its season with two victories at the Wildcat Open in Marquette Friday. Details about their 3-0 wins over Fort Hays State and Upper Iowa are here. The Huskies face Lake Superior State and Cedarville today.
The MTU men’s cross country team took first place at the U.P. Championships in Marquette Friday. Jason Saliga, Daniel Byrne and Eric Parsell of the Huskies finished one-two-three. The Tech women’s team placed second. Runners from Northern Michigan University took the top six places. Find full results here.
The Tech women’s tennis team will host Grand Valley State this morning at 10:00, and Ferris State tomorrow morning at 10:00.
The Northern Michigan University football team opens its season today at Northwood.
Finlandia to Open Football Program Today
The new Finlandia University football team will play its first-ever game this afternoon against Alma College. Kickoff is at 1:00 at McAfee Field.
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team shut out Northland College 3-0 Friday. Alex Freeman scored twice, and Diego Vega added a late goal. Bryan Donis got the win in goal. See the box score here. The women’s team lost to Northland 10-0. The Lions were outshot 24-0. The box score is here.
Both Finlandia soccer teams face MacMurray College in Ashland, Wisconsin, this afternoon.
The Finlandia volleyball is also in Ashland. They lost 3-0 to Central College (details here) Friday. The result of their game against Gogebic Community College was not reported. The Lions will face Silver Lake College and Northland College today.
NHL – Red Wings Sign Cleary
The Detroit Red Wings have signed forward Daniel Cleary to a one-year contract. If he doesn’t make the team to start the season, the 36-year-old veteran can be assigned to Detroit’s Grand Rapids minor-league affiliate. Cleary has spent 10 years in Detroit, but saw limited action last season.
NBA – Gores Completes Purchase of Pistons
Detroit Pistons majority owner Tom Gores is now the team’s sole owner. Gores recently purchased the remaining 49 percent of the club from his co-investor, which was an investment group that he owns. Bottom line – nothing changes.
