L’Anse Opens VB Playoffs with Win – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School

In local high school volleyball tournament play last night…
• In Division Three, L’Anse advanced with a 3-2 victory over West Iron County. The Purple Hornets will host Jeffers tomorrow night at 7:00 in one district semifinal. Hancock will play at Calumet in the other.
• In Division Four District 98, the quarterfinal match between Chassell and Baraga was canceled because Baraga is on a two-week COVID-19 hiatus. The Panthers will advance all the way to the district final Thursday night. Their semifinal match against Ontonagon scheduled for tomorrow has also been canceled, because of Ontonagon’s COVID-19hiatus.

Tonight…
• Houghton entertains Gladstone in a Division Two district semifinal. Kingsford plays at Escanaba in the other semifinal.

MLB

Brewers reliever Devin Williams has been named a finalist for the National League Rookie of the Year Award. Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm and Padres infielder Jake Cronenworth are the other two in contention. The winner will be named Monday.

Tigers’ shortstop Willi Castro did not make the final three for the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

Infielder Ryon Healy is no longer a Brewer. Healy has twice hit 24 or more homers in a season, but played in just four regular-season games for Milwaukee this past season. The team designated him for assignment, and he elected to become a free agent.

NFL

Last night, Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes, as the Buccaneers edged the Giants 25-23.

If you played The Wolf Pro Football Challenge, you must have selected at least nine games correctly to be eligible to become our weekly winner.

The Packers have canceled in-person activities, and have begun the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol. The move comes after running back AJ Dillon tested positive for the coronavirus. He’s been placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list. Green Bay’s Thursday night game against the 49ers is still on the schedule.

With Kenny Golladay sidelined because of a hip injury, the Lions tried out veteran receiver Mohamed Sanu yesterday. The nine-year veteran was recently released by the 49ers.

Our high school football playoff coverage continues this weekend. Calumet plays at Menominee Friday night – the pregame show begins at 6:40 on KBear 102.3. Lake Linden-Hubbell kicks off at North Central Saturday. Coverage starts at 1:40 on KBear 102.3.
