High School
In girls high school basketball last night…
– L’Anse built a 25-8 halftime lead, and held off a spirited Baraga third-quarter comeback to earn a 51-34 victory on their home court. The Vikings closed the gap to just six points in the second half, but the Purple Hornets took advantage of free throw opportunities to close out the game. Carsyn Osterman of the Vikings led all scorers with 22 points – 16 in the second half. Sarah Dix led a balanced L’Anse attack with 11 points. Bailey Froberg added 11. – Houghton defeated West Iron County 55-32. Sloane Zenner led the Gremlins with 18 points.
– Ontonagon defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 42-33.
– Jeffers smothered Bessemer 61-31.
– The Chassell game at Lake Linden-Hubbell was postponed until Monday night.
In last night’s only local boys game, Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 74-57.

– L’Anse defeated Petoskey 3-2 at the Petoskey Showcase. The Purple Hornets will face Freeland today.
MTU
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team entertains Wisconsin-Parkside this evening. Tip-off is at 5:00. The Huskies women’s basketball team hosts Finlandia for an exhibition game tonight. Tip-off is at 7:00 at the SDC.
NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s team welcomes Grace Bible College this afternoon. The Wildcats women’s team is at the Bellarmine Classic in Louisville, where they’ll play Southern Indiana this afternoon, and the host team tomorrow.
GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers defeated the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 7-5 Friday night. The Pioneers built an early 3-0 lead midway through the first period, but the Ice Dogs came back, and led 4-3 after two. Portage Lake scored four times in the third period to put the game away. Connor Hannon had two goals and an assist, and Jay Pietila had a goal and two assist. Matt Messina stopped 33 of 38 shots in goal. The Pioneers visit the Monroe Blues tonight.
The Calumet Wolverines dumped the Marquette Iron Rangers 9-6 Friday night. Those two teams play at the Colosseum again tonight. Faceoff is at 7:30.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings fell to the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 in a shootout Friday night. Detroit trailed the entire game until Henrik Zetterberg tied it with a minute to go in regulation. Pavel Datsyuk had a goal and an assist. Jimmy Howard stopped 37 shots. The Wings host the Calgary Flames tomorrow night.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons outlasted the Chicago Bulls 147-144 in a four-overtime game Friday night. The teams were tied at 105 each after regulation. Each scored 11 points in the first extra period, just seven in the second, and only four in the third. The floodgates opened in the fourth overtime. Detroit scored the first seven points and then hung on, outscoring Chicago 20-17 to take the game. Andre Drummond had 33 points and 221 rebounds to lead the Pistons. It was the longest game in franchise history, although not the highest-scoring. That was a 186-184 triple-overtime win over the Denver Nuggets on December 13, 1983. Detroit will visit the Miami Heat Tuesday night.
NFL
Tomorrow, the Green Bay Packers visit the Oakland Raiders in a 4:05 game. The Detroit Lions play at New Orleans Monday night.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers have signed utility player Mike Aviles to a one-year contract. Aviles can play all three outfield positions, along with third base, shortstop and second base. To make room for him on the roster, the Tigers designated starting pitcher Kyle Lobstein for assignment. The Tigers have 10 days to offer Lobstein to other teams on waivers, trade him or release him. If he clears waivers, he could be sent to the minors.
