Lamppa Named FinnU Volleyball Coach – Wednesday Spots Wrap

The Detroit Tigers fell to the Los Angeles Angels 6-1 last night. Drew VerHagen took the loss, giving up four runs on 10 hits before leaving in the fifth inning. Detroit catcher Jake Rogers had two singles in his major league debut, and drove in the Tigers’ only run.

The Tigers conclude that series in Los Angeles this afternoon. Daniel Norris will pitch against José Suarez. Pregame coverage will start at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed outfielder Christin Stewart on the injured list. Stewart crashed into the left field wall Monday night, and suffered a concussion.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped a 3-2, 10-inning decision to the Oakland Athletics last night. Eric Thames forced the extra frame when his solo homer tied the contest in the top of the ninth. Matt Olson’s home run off Josh Hader was the game-winner.

The Brewers continue that interleague set in Oakland tonight. Newly-acquired Jordan Lyles is expected to start for Milwaukee, against Brett Anderson.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is this afternoon at 4:00. Unlike previous years, this is a hard deadline – no transactions of any kind will be permitted in August.

Finlandia

Brian Lamppa will be the new head coach of the Finlandia University volleyball team. Lamppa is a Lake Linden native. He spent the past seven years on the staff at the University of Idaho, after several seasons as an assistant at Washington State University. He has served as head coach at the University of South Dakota, and Loras University.

High School

The CLK School District is selling customized paving blocks that will be used for the new entrance to Agassiz Field. Money raised will help pay for the new turf, and other updates at the stadium. Golf

The annual Baraga Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament will be held Saturday at the L’Anse Golf Club. Registration opens at 8:30. Four-player teams will tee off at 9:00 in a shotgun start. It’s a best-ball scramble, with prizes for the top men’s, women’s and mixed teams. The cost is $50.00 per person. For details and a link to online registration, visit the event Facebook page.

The annual Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home Golf Scramble will be held Saturday at Wyandotte Hills in Twin Lakes. It’s an 18-hole, four-person event, with a shotgun start at 10:00.
