MTU Soccer Team Opens GLIAC Tourney

If you buy a ticket, you can enjoy a tailgate party with burgers, pulled pork, hot dogs and brats at the pavilion inside Sherman Field. The tailgate will begin at 12:30.
The Huskies’ hockey sweep over the University of Michigan last weekend has vaulted them into the national top-10. The latest USCHO.com poll puts Tech at number-nine… up eight spots from last week’s rankings. The Wolverines… who were rated 15th last week… fall out of the poll. Northern Michigan University is ranked 20th.
One of the reasons Tech remains unbeaten is goalie Jamie Phillips… who stopped 54-of-57 shots in the two games against Michigan. For his efforts, Phillips was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Week for the second week in a row. He’s one of only four goalies in the nation with a perfect record.

The Packers have signed coach Mike McCarthy to a contract extension. No one’s saying how many seasons the deal covers. General Manager Ted Thompson recently signed an extension that is believed to carry him through the 2018 season. It’s likely that McCarthy’s term would mirror that.
A couple of injured Packers may be back in the lineup this week. Defensive End Datone Jones says the ankle he hurt in week five is feeling better. Lineman J-C Tretter has been brought off injured reserve. To make room on the roster, lineman Derek Sherrod was released.
The Lions are also getting some players back. Rookie linebacker Kyle Van Noy has been brought off injured reserve, and is expected to make his NFL debut Sunday. He’s recovering from core muscle surgery in the offseason. The Lions have signed defensive tackle Andre Fluellen to fill in for the injured Nick Fairley. They released cornerback Danny Gorrer to make room on the roster. Defensive tackle C-J Mosley has been reinstated. Mosley was suspended the day before Detroit’s game against the Falcons in London for violating team rules.
