Lakes Win, Kings and Hornets Fall – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

On the final night of the regular high school football season…
• The Copper Bowl game between Houghton and Hancock was called off because of COVID-19 protocol.
• On a snow-covered Agassiz Field, Marquette shut down Calumet 28-6. Tom Erkkila’s 34-yard run in the second quarter was the Copper Kings’ only score.
• Bark River-Harris dominated L’Anse 28-0.
• In the mud and wind-driven snow in Munising, Lake Linden-Hubbell held off the Mustangs 6-2. Caleb Klein ran for the game’s only touchdown on the Lakes’ first possession. Facing a fourth-and-long deep in their own territory with seven seconds remaining in the game, the Lakes took a safety to set up a kickoff, rather than risking a punt.
• Ontonagon’s game against Forest Park was canceled.

Playoff pairings will be released tomorrow. The traditional FOX Sports Detroit television show unveiling the matchups will not take place. All 11-player teams will make this year’s expanded field. 32 teams out of the 42 in each eight-player division will be included, based on playoff point totals accumulated during the regular season.

In volleyball last night, Chassell defeated Baraga 3-1.

Today, Calumet, Houghton and Gwinn will play for the WestPAC championship at Calumet. Negaunee also qualified for the finals, but had to bow out because of a COVID-19 pause. Houghton and Gwinn will play in game one. Calumet and Gwinn will play in game two. Houghton and Calumet will meet in game three. Our coverage will begin at 9:40 on KBear 102.3.

The U.P. Cross Country finals will be run today…
• Division One schools will compete at Presque Isle Park in Marquette.
• Division Two schools will run at the George Young Recreation Complex at Iron River.
• Division Three schools will compete at the Pictured Rocks Golf Course in Munising.

Winter high school sports will start on time. The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced yesterday that existing schedules will remain in place, as long as the COVID-19 numbers don’t get worse. Face coverings will be required for athletes practicing and competing in hockey, basketball, competitive cheer and wrestling. MHSAA President Mark Uyl did issue a strongly-worded statement, noting that sports will only be able to proceed if coronavirus infection rates are kept under control.

College

Winter sports athletes at NCAA Division II universities will get another season of eligibility. The waiver was issued by the Division II Management Council this week. Officials noted that most D-II winter athletes will see shortened schedules this year, as most schools have suspended athletic activities until at least the start of 2021. The decision affects athletes at Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University.

MLB

The Dodgers defeated the Rays 6-2. L-A leads the World Series 2-1, with game four set for tonight.

The Tigers continue to interview candidates for their open manager’s job. The latest candidates to talk with the team include Cubs third base coach Will Venable, and Dodgers first base coach George Lombard, who was an outfielder for Detroit in 2002.

Detroit second baseman Jonathan Schoop and shortstop Niko Goodrum are among the finalists for this year’s American League Gold Glove Awards. There are no Brewers in the National League finalists. The Gold Glove trophies will be presented November 3rd.
