High School
In the boys’ Class D high school basketball District championship game at Ontonagon Friday night, Lake Linden-Hubbell held off a stubborn Jeffers squad, and advanced to the Regional semifinal with a 46-31 victory. The Lakes held a narrow 18-15 lead at halftime, but began to pull away early in the third period. Tyler Roose led all scorers with 19 points for Lake Linden. Arthur Lyons added nine. An aggressive Jets defense held Copper Country Conference Player of the Year Brett Poissant to just three points. Jaden Wood scored 13 points for the Jets, and Zach Nicholas added nine. The Houghton hockey team will face Cranbrook in the Division Three state title game this afternoon at 2:00 in Plymouth. Our pre-game coverage will begin around 1:30 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Yesterday, the Gremlins got off to a quick start, and defeated Flint Powers Catholic 4-1 in the semifinals. Eric Walter scored in the opening minute. Reid Pietila and Wyatt Liston added goals in the first period. Jacob Cruse added an insurance goal in the second period. Jon Bostwick had two assists. Marcus Gloss made 21 saves for Houghton, and held the Chargers scoreless until the third period. Cranbrook defeated Riverview 8-0 in the other semifinal.
MTU
The MTU women’s basketball team advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals with a 71-59 victory over Cedarville Friday. The Huskies never trailed, but the game was close until Tech broke it open with an 8-0 run midway through the second half. Kelli Guy led the Huskies with 17 points. Tech will face Ashland in the semifinals tonight at 7:30 at the SDC. Ashland advanced with an 81-61 victory over Southern Indiana. In yesterday’s earlier games, Lewis eliminated Wisconsin-Parkside 80-66, and Wayne State upended Drury 75-61. The Warriors and Flyers will meet in the other Regional semifinal this afternoon at 5:00 at the SDC.
The Tech men’s basketball team will open the Midwest Regional tournament this afternoon against Indianapolis at Bellarmine University in Louisville. The Huskies are seeded sixth.
The second-seeded MTU hockey team opened the WCHA tournament with the longest game in school history Friday night. Tyler Heinonen’s goal with 71 seconds remaining in the third overtime period finally gave the Huskies a 1-0 victory. The game lasted 118 minutes and 49 seconds. The statistics are remarkable. Tech outshot Huntsville 77-32. Chargers goalie Carmine Guerriero was under pressure all night, but made 76 saves. The two very tired teams will play game two of the best-of-three series tonight, with the third game tomorrow, if needed. Face-off for each game is at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team dropped a 3-2 overtime decision at Bowling Green in the first game of their best-of-three opening round WCHA playoff series Friday night. Those teams play again tonight.
NHL – Red Wings to Face Flyers
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Philadelphia this afternoon. Face-off is at 1:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
NBA – Pistons Lose at Portland
The fading Detroit Pistons lost 118-99 at Portland Friday night. Greg Monroe led Detroit with 19 points. Andre Drummond,had 16 points and 17 rebounds. The Pistons have now lost nine in a row, and play at Utah tonight. Tip-off is at 9:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
MLB
The Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, and pounded the Braves 12-2 in spring training baseball yesterday afternoon. Starter Shane Greene pitched three scoreless innings. Joba Chamberlain, Al Aburquerque and Luke Putkonen also turned in shutout frames. The Tigers split their squad for games against the Phillies and Yankees this afternoon.
The Brewers fell to the Mariners 10-5 yesterday. Wily Peralta threw three scoreless innings, and Aramis Ramirez hit a two-run double. The Brewers face the Cubs this afternoon.
NFL – Fairley Signs with Rams
Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Nick Fairley has signed a one-year free agent contract with the Rams.
