– Lake Linden-Hubbell High Volleyball swept a triangular… defeating Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 3-0. The Lakes earned the first championship of the Copper Mountain Conference with a 9-0 league mark. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Ewen-Trout Creek 3-0 in the third match.
– Wakefield-Marenisco swept a triangular at Baraga… beating Chassell 3-0, and the host Vikings 3-1. Chassell got past Baraga 3-2 in the third match.

The Finlandia University men’s basketball team led Northern Michigan University by three points at halftime in last night’s exhibition game, but wound up losing to the Wildcats 90-82. See video highlights from the game here.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team opens its season with a pair of home games this weekend. The Lions will face off against Wisconsin-Stout tonight at 7:15, and Wisconsin-Superior tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia football team plays at Maranatha Baptist tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team wraps up its season with a game at Cleary University tomorrow. The men’s soccer team plays at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota on Sunday.

MTU Huskies LogoThe Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has been picked to take the title in the GLIAC North Division this season. The coaches’ poll released yesterday has Grand Valley second, and Northern Michigan University fourth. Danielle Blake of the Huskies was the coaches’ preseason pick for Player of the Year. The Tech hockey team entertains Ferris State tonight and tomorrow night. Faceoffs are at 7:07 at MacInnes Arena.

The Tech volleyball team hosts Ferris State tonight at 5:00, and Grand Valley tomorrow at 4:00.

The MTU soccer team closes its regular season with a game at Northern Michigan University tomorrow at noon.

The football Huskies play their final home game of the season tomorrow, against Tiffin. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

Hancock native Tanner Kero saw 11:40 of ice time in his first game with the Chicago Blackhawks last night. He earned no points, as the Hawks fell to the Winnipeg Jets 3-1.

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines were supposed to open their seasons with a game against each other at the Colosseum tonight. That game has been postponed, and will be made up at a later date.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Chicago Bulls tonight. The Pistons have also confirmed reports that they will retire the jersey numbers of Chauncey Billups and Ben Wallace sometime this season.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals visit the New York Mets in game three of the World Series tonight. KC has won the first two games.

Detroit Tigers pitcher Daniel Norris says the surgery to remove that cancerous growth on his thyroid was successful, and he is cancer-free.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the New England Patriots blasted the Miami Dolphins 36-7.

On Sunday, the Detroit Lions face the Atlanta Falcons in London. Kickoff is at 9:30 in the morning on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. The Green Bay Packers play in the Sunday night game against the Broncos at Denver. Kickoff is at 8:30 in the evening on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
