In high school softball yesterday…
• The Calumet-Negaunee doubleheader was postponed to May 16th.

On today’s softball schedule…
• Houghton welcomes Lake Linden-Hubbell.

In baseball yesterday…
• Calumet edged Houghton 4-3.

In baseball today…
• Jeffers travels to Norway for a game that was rescheduled from April 17th.

The Houghton girls soccer team v Kingsford yesterday – no report.

At the Negaunee Invitational golf tournament yesterday…
• On the boys side, Houghton finished second to Marquette. Hancock was third, and Calumet fifth. Jackson Sintkowski of the Bulldogs placed third individually.
• On the girls side, Calumet was runner-up to Marquette. Houghton placed fifth. Maretta Kangas of the Copper Kings placed second individually.

In golf today, Jeffers, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Chassell and Baraga will be among the teams competing at the Ironwood Invitational.

Lake Linden-Hubbell swept both sides of the Hancock Track Invitational.
• On the girls side, the Lakes easily outscored runner-up Calumet. Hancock finished third, followed by Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Baraga, Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek, Jeffers, Chassell and Gogebic. For the Lakes, Emily Jokela won the 100 and 400-meter dashes, and the 200-meter hurdles. Abi Codere won the pole vault and the 100-meter hurdles. Hancock’s Ella Keranen took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.
• The Lakes boys easily outdistanced runner-up Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Calumet finished third, followed by L’Anse, Hancock, Baraga, Chassell, Ontonagon, Jeffers and Republic-Michigamme. For Lake Linden, Matthew Jokela took the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. Chassell’s Kalvin Kytta claimed the 1600 and 3200-meter runs.

College Hockey

 The Michigan Tech hockey schedule for the 2024-2025 season has been revealed. The Huskies will host Northern for an exhibition match October 5th, then open the regular season at Alaska the following weekend. After a home set against Clarkson, Tech will kick off the CCHA schedule with a home-and-home against Northern the first weekend in November. The Huskies will compete at the Great Lakes Invitational in late December, facing Western Michigan in the opening game, and either Michigan State or Northern on day two. In early January, they’ll travel to Arizona for the Coachella Valley Cactus Cup. Lake Superior State visits the second weekend in January, and the second home-and-home against Northern will take place January 24th and 25th. Bemidji State will be this year’s Winter Carnival opponent. See the full schedule here.

In NHL second-round playoff action last night…
• The Rangers got past the Hurricanes 4-3 in double overtime. New York leads that Eastern Conference set 2-0.
• The Avalanche edged the Stars 4-3 in single overtime to win the first game of that Western Conference set.

Tonight…
• The Panthers host the Bruins. Boston leads that Eastern Conference series 1-0.
• The Canucks welcome the Oilers in the first game of that Western Conference series.

The Red Wings will have the 15th pick in the upcoming NHL draft. At the lottery for non-playoff teams last night, the Sharks claimed the first position. The Blackhawks will pick second.

NBA

In NBA conference semifinal play last night…
• The Celtics stopped the Cavaliers 120-95 in the opening game of that Eastern Conference set.
• The Thunder outscored the Mavericks 117-95 in the first game of that Western Conference series.

Tonight…
• The Knicks entertain the Pacers. New York leads that Eastern Conference series 1-0.

MLB

The Tigers snapped their four-game losing streak with an 11-7 comeback victory over the Guardians. Cleveland scored all of their runs in the first two innings off Kenta Maeda. Four relievers held them to just three hits after that. Andy Ibáñez led the Detroit offense with four hits, including two home runs. He drove in four runs. Recent call-up Ryan Vilade had two hits and three RBI.

The Tigers visit the Guardians again this afternoon. Reese Olson will start against Tanner Bibee. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Willy Adames’ three-run homer in the top of the ninth lifted the Brewers to a 6-5 victory over the Royals last evening. Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz also homered. Colin Rea tossed four shutout innings, but left as Kansas City scored four in the fifth.

The Brewers visit the Royals again this afternoon. Joe Ross will pitch against Brady Singer.
