Lakes Sweep CCC Track Meet – Tuesday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Fall to Brewers
The Detroit Tigers lost to the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 last night. Carlos Gomez led off the game with a home run for Milwaukee, and singled in the winning run in the seventh inning. Aramis Ramirez also homered for Milwaukee. The Tigers got solo runs in the first and second innings against Brewers’ starter Mike Fiers, who left the game in the sixth inning with two runners on base. Jeremy Jeffress struck out Rajai Davis to end the threat. He earned the win. Detroit starter Kyle Lobstein took the loss, giving up all three Milwaukee runs before leaving in the seventh.

The Tigers continue that home set against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight. Anibal Sanchez will start against Jimmy Nelson. Hear the first pitch at 7:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

In high school softball today, Houghton entertains Ishpeming, Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Jeffers, and Baraga visits L’Anse.

In Copper Country Slow Pitch League play last night…
Copper Country Slow Pitch Logo– At Hurontown, Post 90-Lakes Lounge scored 11 runs in the first inning, and cruised past Library-Thermodynamics 20-12. Kevin LaRoux and Bill Bastion each had four hits for Post 90. Post 90 then scored 14 runs in the third inning, and beat Monte Carlo-Coca Cola 27-11. LaRoux homered, and Bradley Brandenburg had four hits.
– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Auto Value scored 12 runs in the sixth inning, and beat The Marley Bar 26-11. DJ Coponen, Jake Loukus, and James Loukus homered for Auto Value. Auto Value then smothered Downtowner 2 38-2. Alex Loukus had five hits, including two home runs, and Nate McMullen also homered.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Matt’s Auto Glass scored 19 runs in the second inning, and 12 in the third, and wiped out Andy’s Team 50-7. Every Matt’s player had at least three hits – Kent Larson had seven. Darren Kinnunen hit two home runs, and Larson, Brent Jurmu and Darick Coponen each hit one out. The result of the Tech-Nutini’s game was not posted, but might be available at the league website.

NHL – Babcock Decision Near
Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Babcock is expected to announce tomorrow where he’ll be coaching next season. Babcock’s contract with Detroit expires June 30th. The Wings want him back, but Buffalo, Toronto, San Jose and Saint Louis also have expressed interest.

Lake Linden Hubbell swept the Copper Country Conference track and field meet held at Baraga yesterday. The Lakes boys outpointed Republic-Michigamme 183-119. Dollar Bay placed third, followed by Ontonagon, Jeffers, Chassell and Baraga. The Lakes girls easily outpaced Ontonagon 176-95. Dollar Bay finished third, followed by Chassell, Baraga, Republic-Michigamme and Jeffers. You can see full results from the boys meet here, and the girls meet here.

Conference awards were handed out after the meet. Kyle LeClaire from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was named the boys most valuable player. Lake Linden-Hubbell’s Brendan Middleton was named top sprinter, and teammate Lucas Klein was selected top thrower. Brandon DeRosier from Jeffers was selected as top boys distance runner, and Cody Carlson from Republic-Michigamme earned boys jumper honors. Doug Hodges from Lake Linden-Hubbell was named coach of the year.

Sarah Audette from Lake Linden-Hubbell was named the girls most valuable player. Paige Blake from Ontonagon was named top girls sprinter, and teammate Lori Wardynski was honored as top girls jumper. The top girls distance runner was Shitaye Sam from Chassell, and the top girls thrower was Vivica Nelson from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Gary Guisfredi from Lake Linden-Hubbell was named girls coach of the year.
