High School

In high school football Saturday…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell steamrolled Stephenson 54-20. Danny Marcotte threw four touchdown passes. Marcotte and Sammy Roberts each rushed for 116 yards, and two touchdowns.

The Houghton soccer team at Sault Ste. Marie Saturday – no report.

College Football

The Michigan Tech football team held off Wisconsin-Platteville 24-20 Saturday. The Huskies survived five turnovers. Alex Fries passed for 288 yards and a touchdown, but tossed three interceptions. He ran for another score. Marc Sippel’s interception with 1:06 remaining snuffed out a final drive by the Pioneers.

The Northern football team lost 34-3 to Division III school Wisconsin-LaCrosse Saturday.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team lost to Davenport University in three close sets Saturday (21-25, 24-16, 21-25). Lindy Oujiri led the Huskies with 15 kills.

The Northern volleyball squad lost 3-1 to Grand Valley Saturday.

College Soccer

The Michigan Tech soccer team will host Parkside today at noon.

The Northern women’s soccer team will entertain Purdue Northwest today. The Northern men’s team will host Saginaw Valley State today.

MLB

Miguel Cabrera singled home Kerry Carpenter with the winning run in the top of the 10th inning, as the Tigers edged the Angels 5-4 Saturday night. Rookie starter Sawyer Gipson-Long turned in five impressive innings, striking out 11, while giving up a run on two hits. Zack Short’s three-run homer in the second inning gave Detroit an early lead, but two Angels home runs off Alex Lange in the bottom of the ninth forced the extra inning. Will Vest pitched the bottom of the 10th, and earned the save.

The Tigers visit the Angels again today. Reliever Miguel Díaz will open the game for Detroit, with Joey Wentz expected to succeed him in the second inning. Reid Detmers will start for L-A. We’ll join the game after Detroit Lions football on 99.3 The Lift.

Mark Canha’s grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning powered the Brewers past the Nationals 9-5 Saturday. The blow came just after Washington had erased an early Milwaukee lead. Corbin Burnes gave up a run over five innings, then left as the Nationals scored three times in the sixth.

The Brewers entertain the Nationals again today. Brandon Woodruff will start against Patrick Corbin.

The Cubs lost to the Diamondbacks in 13 innings, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central Division swells to six-and-a-half games over Chicago, with Cincinnati seven games back.

Twilight League Baseball

The Copper Country Twilight Baseball League champions Garnet Garage will face Marquette today at 2:00 in an interleague championship game at the Stanton Field.

NFL

The Lions host the Seahawks in a 1:00 game today on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers visit the Falcons in a 1:00 contest today.

The Jets will have a former Packers quarterback available for today’s game against the Cowboys. Former Green Bay and Detroit backup Tim Boyle has been moved up from the New York practice squad to back up Zach Wilson, who will start instead of former Packers signal-caller Aaron Rodgers.
