Lakes’ Season Ends – Sunday Sports Wrap

Lake Linden Hubbell LogoLake Linden-Hubbell’s fine football season ended in the opening round of the Division Eight playoffs Saturday, with a 24-0 loss to the Forest Park Trojans. The Lakes’ offense never got untracked on a rainy, muddy afternoon at Warner Field. The game was scoreless until the final minute of the first half, when Forest Park running back Daniel Nocerini powered into the endzone from seven yards out. Nocerini added a nine-yard touchdown run midway through the third quarter, then completed the scoring by hitting Billy Ragio with a 21-yard halfback option pass early in the fourth quarter. The Lakes finish the season at 9-1. They were unbeaten in the regular campaign, and reign as champions of the Great Western Conference.

Here’s where Upper Peninsula teams stand after the first weekend of the playoffs…

In the Eight Man Division…
– North Central eliminated Stephenson 70-22.
– Rapid River ousted Engadine 36-29.
The Jets and the Rockets will play at Powers next weekend.

– Pickford lost to Posen 38-28.
– Cedarville defeated Owendale-Gagetown 48-28.
The Vikings and Trojans will play at Posen next weekend.

In Division Eight…
– Forest Park defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 24-0.
– Bark River-Harris eliminated Munising 22-6.
The Broncos will host the Trojans next weekend.

– St. Ignace eliminated Newberry 50-20.
– Johannesburg-Lewiston shut down Hillman 35-8.
The Saints and Cardinals will play at Johannesburg next weekend.

In Division Seven…
– Ishpeming defeated Westwood 26-6.
– Iron Mountain blanked Harbor Springs 40-0.
The Hematites will host the Mountaineers next weekend.

In Division Six…
– Calumet eliminated Negaunee 24-14.
– Boyne City dispatched Oscoda 55-20.

In Division Five…
– Menominee shut down Grayling 56-7.
– Kingsford shut out Harrison 25-0.
The Maroons will entertain the Flivvers next weekend.

In Division Four…
– Escanaba lost to Big Rapids 21-17.

In Division Three…
– Sault Ste. Marie fell to Petoskey 34-7.

The Michigan Tech hockey team lost to Ferris State 3-2 Saturday night. Reid Sturos and Max Vallis each scored for the Huskies. Jamie Phillips made 22 saves in the losing effort. On Friday night, Malcolm Gould’s overtime goal lifted the Michigan Tech hockey team to a 5-4 victory over the Bulldogs.

Kevin Miller’s two-point conversion run in overtime lifted the Huskies’ football team to a 39-38 win over Tiffin Saturday. The dramatic play came after the Dragons had opened the extra period by scoring a touchdown, and kicking an extra point. The Huskies responded with a one-yard Alex Sherbinow touchdown run, setting up Miller’s game-winning conversion. Miller rushed for 98 yards in the game. Brandon Cowie completed 20 of 24 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns.

The Tech volleyball team lost to Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon 3-1 (16-25, 18-25, 25-21, 14-25). On Friday night, the Huskies fell to top-ranked Ferris State 3-0 (19-25, 16-25, 17-25).

The MTU soccer team closed its regular season with a 2-1 loss at Northern Michigan University Saturday. Lexi Herrewig scored for the Huskies, who are seeded sixth in the GLIAC tournament, and will play at Ashland in the quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.

The Northern Michigan football team defeated Walsh 35-17 Saturday night. Wildcats quarterback Shaye Brown threw three touchdown passes, and set a new single-season team record with 23.

The NMU hockey team skated past Bemidji State 3-1 Saturday night. Those teams skated to a 0-0 tie on Friday.

The Finlandia University men’s hockey team fell to Wisconsin-Superior 4-1 on Saturday. Bryce Mitzel scored the Lions’ only goal early in the third period. On Friday night, Finlandia couldn’t hold an early two-goal lead, and opened its season by skating to a 3-3 tie with Wisconsin-Stout.

The Finlandia football team earned its third win of the season by beating Maranatha Baptist University 29-16 Saturday afternoon. It was their second win over the Sabercats.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team wrapped up its season with an 8-1 loss at Cleary University today. The Lions finished with a record of 1-12. The men’s soccer team plays at St. Mary’s University in Minnesota today.

The Detroit Red Wings’ offense finally clicked Saturday night, as they skated past the Ottawa Senators 5-3. Tomas Tatar had a goal and an assist. Detroit captain Henrik Zetterberg had two assists. The first was the 500th of his NHL career. The second was his 800th career point. Petr Mrazek stopped 33 shots. The Wings host the Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday night. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons host the Indiana Pacers on Tuesday.

MLB
The Kansas City Royals took a commanding lead in the World Series with a 5-3 victory over the New York Mets on Saturday. KC leads the best-of-seven set three games to one, and could clinch the title with a victory at new York tonight.

NFL
The Detroit Lions face the Kansas City Chiefs this morning in London. Kickoff is at 9:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY. The Green Bay Packers play in the Sunday night game against the Broncos at Denver. Kickoff is at 8:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.
